What we want for our school- a summary of PTA community discussions
As a PTA, we believe that our educational system needs to change. We support parents advocating for what they feel is best for their students. The current path our schools are on is unsustainable and we know we cannot continue the “status quo.”
We want well-resourced schools for our kids and for district leaders to listen to us about what they look like. This includes:
-
caps on classroom sizes
-
unblended grades
-
full-time on-site specials teachers
-
a full-time on-site counselor
-
safe and healthy building structures
-
challenge/TAG groups and reading supports
We want transparency and mutuality in this process. We want PPS leaders to listen to impacted communities and provide support before, during, and after transitions, especially for students moving between schools. We want clear communication about budgets and resource allocation.
We want to know that district leaders understand the full consequences of their proposals, the actions required to achieve the intended benefits, and will stand with us through these transitions.
We encourage Abernethy families to raise their voices and express their own views on the rightsizing process by contacting district leaders. We are one community with many voices. We are here to support you in raising your voices for our community. We are already actively engaging with our fellow SE PTAs in discussions with the School Board, our elected representatives, the District and our school leadership. We want to understand your perspective and empower action.
For more information about how rightsizing may affect our school, review the PPS family guide for Abernethy, which shows the proposed changes and their direct impact on our school as published by the district.
