After-School Classes Price Change Announcement – New WA State Tax
TLDR: Some classes will increase their pricing - based on a new tax rate of 10.45%
We are reaching out to make sure that everyone is aware of a new Washington State tax that affects many of our after school enrichment programs.
Previously, these programs were subject only to the Service B&O tax (at a rate of 1.5%). However, as of October 1, 2025, a new law, ESSB 5814, requires that certain services be classified as retail sales, and therefore become subject to retail sales tax.
In Seattle, the retail sales tax rate is 10.35%, and it will increase to 10.45% on January 1, 2026. The classes we offer that fall into the category of “live presentations” are now required to collect this sales tax. If you’d like to read more about this change, you can find more information here.
This change has been very disappointing for our providers who are affected by the new classification. They had hoped to keep prices steady, but to comply with the law and cover the required tax, they must adjust their pricing.
We know that any price increase can be difficult for families, and we want to support you. Scholarships are available if your family needs financial assistance. Scholarship information can be found here.
Book Bounce
One of Adams Elementary’s most beloved annual traditions, the Book Bounce, happens every year in the spring. Families donate books they are finished with, and all students get to select fresh books to bring home for FREE.
If you are looking to clean out your family’s bookshelves before the winter break/winter holidays, please consider donating to the Book Bounce!
Highly sought-after books include the following:
- Graphic novels of all sorts
- Dav Pilkey series: Dog Man, Cat Kid Comic Club, Captain Underpants
- Books on popular franchises, such as Harry Potter, Pokemon, Minecraft, Star Wars
- Weird But True series books
We also welcome donations of cloth bags/reusable bags to help send home books from the Book Bounce!
