NEW! Principal’s Message
Dear Addison Families,
This past week, our 5th graders put on a powerful presentation related to the Civil Rights Movement. They practiced and presented at Walter Hays School and our 4th grade students attended along with parents. The messages of equality, advocacy, courage, and non-violence moved the audience and inspired students to continue using their voices to stand up for the rights of all individuals.
At the end of the week, our School Psychologist (Rita Rodriguez), Interim Director of Special Education (Jennifer Baker), and I partnered with PTA and CAC to present how we support Addison students with learning differences and social challenges. We discussed the process of identifying unique needs through parent-teacher conferences, Student Success Team (SST) meetings, and our Response to Intervention (RtI) model. I shared my great appreciation for the plentiful resources we have at Addison to serve the needs of ALL students including two Reading Specialists, a Math Specialist, two Educational Specialists, an English Language Development Teacher, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and Counselor. Information regarding these additional supports and services are in the Addison Handbook or feel free to ask your child’s teacher or myself at any time to learn more. Additionally, we are fortunate to have a PTA parent special education/ inclusion representative, Shira Mowlem, who has done amazing work to support our community. She can be contacted at email@example.com
We are looking forward to our upcoming Professional Learning Day on Feb. 13. Each site selected their own topics for professional development and I’m excited to share that eight of our Addison teachers will be sharing information, strategies, and practices alongside me! I’m constantly in awe of our teaching staff and proud of their willingness to share their knowledge with their colleagues. We are focusing on dyslexia, reading levels, spelling, structured word inquiry, math assessments, and math differentiation. It will be a busy day but then we’ll enjoy the long weekend. Please note that students return to school on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Have a wonderful President’s Day Weekend and a Happy Valentine’s Day!
NEW! February Birthday Book Club Wed, Feb 12, 1:15-1:45pm, Addison Library
Please join us on Wed, Feb 12 for Birthday Book Club. If your student has a birthday in February, January, December, November, October, September, or August, please join us in the Addison Library between 1:15 and 1:45.
During monthly Birthday Book Club (BBC) celebrations, birthday students select a new book or an old favorite that has already been purchased by the library. This book is then dedicated to the student using a specially designed Birthday Book Club book plate and spine. Students check out their birthday book and return it to the library when they are finished reading it so that it can be enjoyed by others for years to come. Every child is welcome to participate during his or her birthday month (or any month following if you missed your month). Parents are welcome to come with their children to help them select a book.
We look forward to seeing you and your children on Wednesday!

NEW! Parents Raise over $700 for Addison
Thanks to the generosity of Mendocino Farms restaurant and the support of our Addison families, we raised over $700 at Give Back Night. On January 15th, over 45 families ate dinner at the restaurant where 50% of the proceeds went to our school. Thanks to all for continuing to support our education programs, field trips, library and extracurricular activities at Addison!
NEW! Family Science Night - Gadgets in Motions!
The entire family is invited to Addison’s Family Science Night on Thurs, Feb 27th from 6:30-8:00pm at the Walter Hays MP Room. The Children’s Discovery Museum is bringing interactive exhibits for us to enjoy - Escaping air causes a propeller to spin. A single marble uses momentum to move a mountain of marbles. Straws and paper transform into a launching rocket. Come enjoy a fun night of physics with fellow Addison families! Pizza slices will be available for $2/each until we run out.

This parent-centered conference will empower and engage you as we deepen parents’ learning around important topics that affect your child at school and home. We also welcome our Keynote Speaker, Jonathan Mooney. Childcare, continental breakfast, and lunch provided. The Summit is free but please Register Here!
During the Summit, Palo Alto CAC will offer a dyslexia/learning differences simulation with partners from PTAC and REEL. 1 in 5 people experience Learning Differences like dyslexia. Hands-on activities will let participants experience some of the challenges and frustrations faced by students with language-based learning disabilities. Rotate among guided stations that simulate tasks encountered in the classroom. Gain empathy and a better understanding of the needs and supports for those with learning differences. Space limited.
NEW! The Bond Citizens Oversight Committee (COC)
The COC is a seven-member group that meets four times per year to review our two Strong School Bond programs. Note the COC is different than the Board Bond Advisory Committee (BBAC) being advertised below. Although both committees concern the bond measure, COC meets 4 times a year. BBAC meets monthly.
