Dear Addison Families,
It is with great pride and relief that I write this final Principal's Update for the 2020-21 school year. The emotions and memories are still vivid in my mind when Superintendent Austin called all the K-12 Principals together on March 13, 2020 to announce that would be the last day of in-person instruction until after Spring Break. I pulled together the Addison Staff at lunch and we quickly put together a plan for distributing student materials and Chromebooks in case school closure lasted beyond Spring Break. We had one last in-person staff meeting on Monday, March 16, 2020 when we all learned how to use Zoom, discussed the meaning of a new phrase- "social distancing"- and brainstormed FLO's (flexible learning options) for the remainder of the year. In the blink of an eye, our entire profession was transformed and would continue to evolve in ways unimaginable throughout the end of this school year.
I have said this many times before but it bears repeating... I could not be more proud and grateful to work with the amazing Addison staff, students, and families. From the first day of school closure, staff and parents rose to the challenge of working together in creative ways for our students. There may have been some bumps along the way but I always felt unwavering support and collaboration with the teachers, front office staff, custodian, aides, and families. Thank you for the trust you instilled in me as Principal; I will never take that for granted.
Another great milestone for our community was the completion of the Addison construction project. This was truly a labor of love for me that has spanned the entire seven years I've worked at Addison from the initial conversations and previewing schematic designs to the countless construction meetings and actual completion of the project. Nancy and I put together the Addison Construction Story with images of this journey. I will forever be thankful for being given the opportunity to lead this important endeavor that will be enjoyed by our families for generations to come.
There is a lot of important work ahead in the 2021-22 school year as we recover from the pandemic but what we have accomplished thus far gives me the confidence that anything is possible. A few key staff members will be greatly missed including Karen Kitayama, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Bramlett, Rita Rodriguez (School Psychologist), and Brian Casino (IT Support) but their legacies will live on through their ideas, practices, compassion, and tech support. Additionally, we are saying goodbye to parents who served many hours on PTA and School Site Council in leadership roles- Lauren Williams, Adrienne Germain, Nishita Kothary, Tamlin Santos, Greg Wolff, Irene Wong, and John Bressler. Our community is stronger and more vibrant because of your contributions!
Next year we will be welcoming some new staff members: Annie Harrier, 1st grade, and Vivian Landa, 4th grade. I am also very close to hiring a new Kindergarten teacher as we interviewed some great candidates last week and should be finishing the process this week. The energy and experiences of these new staff members will bring new growth to Addison!
As the year wraps up, please complete the Addison Parent Survey 2020-21 if you haven't already as we will close it on Friday, June 4th. Also, if your child is returning to Addison next year, our IT Department is asking all students to take their PAUSD issued Chromebook home for the summer. Only students enrolled in summer school will have access to Lexia and Dreambox but Learning A-Z (Raz Kids) will still be available. Progress Reports will be released online on Monday, June 7th, and directions for accessing it will be sent via Parent Square. Finally, our last day of school is Thursday, June 3rd, and in-person students will be dismissed at 1:30pm.
Best wishes to our graduating 5th graders and departing families; Addison will always welcome you back with open arms. I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing summer and I'll look forward to seeing you in August!
