Principal's Update: September 16, 2020

Dear Addison Families,

 

Hope you are all doing well and finally enjoying some clean air!  I realized over the past couple weeks how important it is for my overall well-being to spend time outdoors as it’s been difficult to restrict that time lately.  We cannot dismiss what an extremely challenging year this has been with the pandemic, wildfires, air quality, and adjusting to online learning.  I never want to take for granted the trust, respect, and camaraderie that we share as an Addison community that helps us through these tough times.

 

In my newsletter last week, I updated you regarding Santa Clara County’s move from the purple to red tier which gave schools the ability to consider re-opening in person. Earlier today, you received an email from our Superintendent who shared that the Board will consider a Re-Opening Plan at the September 22 Board Meeting.  The agenda for this meeting and supporting documents will be posted on the PAUSD website this Friday, September 18.

 

Additionally, the Superintendent plans to host a webinar on Monday, September 21 to explain more about the Re-Opening Plan.  Information about this event will be sent out on Friday.  I strongly encourage you to watch both the webinar and Board Meeting to better understand your options as parents in terms of sending your child(ren) back to campus or continuing with Full Distance Learning.  Safety measures, protocols, and schedules will be discussed to help you make this decision.  A parent survey will be sent out soon asking you to decide whether to allow your child(ren) to return to school or continue with distance learning.  Staying informed about your options through the webinar and Board Meeting will greatly assist you in that decision.

 

It was also shared today that a proposed schedule for students’ return will be discussed at the Board Meeting.  The proposal to the Board of Education for in-person return dates are as follows:

  • Grades TK – 1:  October 12
  • Grades 2 – 3:   October 26
  • Grades 4 – 5: November 9
  • Grades 6 – 12 : January 7

Please note that if the Board approves these dates, students would only return for half the week in a hybrid model to promote social distancing and implement safety measures.  I will update our community on any decisions or changes to this plan again next Wednesday.

 

We are continuing with our beginning of the year assessments.  Hopefully by now your child has taken the online Lexia Reading Assessment through their Rapid ID account.  If not, please make sure he/she takes it ASAP or email me with any questions.  This week, students will take a Writing Assessment.  For any of our online assessments, please make sure your child is taking the assessments independently without any parental guidance or intervention.  We use this information to plan instruction and groups so we need a child’s independent work to know what is the next area of growth for your child and how to best instruct him/her. 

 

Thank you to those families who have reviewed the PAUSD Technology Guidelines with your child(ren).  If you have not already done so, please review and sign the online document.  We are still encountering problems with older students creating and sharing content on Google that is not directed or supervised by the teacher.  If you have a 3rd-5th grade child, please inform him/her that according to Administrative Regulation 6163.4, “The Palo Alto Unified School District expects that students will use District technology for purposes consistent with the instructional program. PAUSD technology resources should be used for class assignments and other learning activities. Only school related files should be stored in student accounts.”  Thank you for your support with this issue.
