INTERNATIONAL NIGHT TIME CHANGE!

MONDAY FEBRUARY 24th, 2020

6-7:30 p.m.

Come out to celebrate the diversity and multiculturalism that exists within the Aiken school community. It’s one of our favorite nights of the school year! This year we would like to enhance our international night to include more opportunities to showcase the traditions and cultures within our school community. Some examples may be teaching a dance, native to a particular country, teaching students how to write their names in a different language, sharing a book, sharing photographs, or assembling tri-boards.

To help make this night successful and fun, we welcome your participation and contribution. Please email tina_provenzano@yahoo.com with the country you would like to help highlight. Once we have a list of participants we will contact you with more information.

AIKEN'S GOT TALENT -
AUDITIONS February 25th
Calling all second through fifth graders!!  Do you have a cool talent you want to show off?  Sing? Dance?  Juggle fire??  Come on February 25th to audition for the Third Annual Aiken's Got Talent Show!!  Auditions will be held right after school in the auditorium.  The event is scheduled for March 25th at 6:00 pm. If your child will need music to accompany their performance, please be sure to add it to the permission slip.  No YouTube, please (wifi at Aiken is not great so I'll need to download all the music).
Email abiahruel@gmail.com with questions.

BIG CHANGES ARE COMING TO OUR CAFETERIA

Did you know that a typical elementary school in West Hartford throws out as many as 30,000 Styrofoam plates or bowls in just one year.  This is a shocking number and your PTO is happy to let you know we are working to change this!  We are one of 4 West Hartford elementary schools teaming up with SustainableCT, Growing Great Schools, and the WHPS Nutrition Services to buy reusable slotted trays that will be used instead of Styrofoam!  Please see the attached flyer for more information, as well as the attached picture which shows what the new trays will look like.  These should arrive at Aiken in April!!  Our next mission will be to get rid of the single-use flatware and make the switch to reusable.  Please email abiahruel@gmail.com with questions or if you want to help continue the trend toward a greener Aiken School.

  LIBRARY FUN!
During the month of March, lots of activities will be going on in the Aiken library!  Aiken will be celebrating Read Across America the week of 3/2-3/6.  This is always a fun week with lots of activities centered around the joy of reading, including Snuggle Up and Read Night on March 4th!  Another exciting event is author and illustrator Mike Curato will be visiting Aiken on Tuesday, March 17th.  If you would like to pre-order one of his books for your child so that he may sign it during his visit, please see the attached flyers.  All pre-orders are due by February 28th.  A paper flyer should have also come home this weekend with your child.  The students are getting very excited for Mike's visit, we have started reading some of his books in our library classes and they are really enjoying them!  It is going to be a very exciting day when he comes

STUDENT COUNCIL UPDATE

Please join me in congratulating the newest Student Council Board members:  Talia Santiago as President, Christian Hutton as Vice President, Lincoln Ruel as Treasurer, and Mady Heneghan as Secretary.  The entire Student Council is working hard on some fun events for the Aiken Community.  Stay tuned for more information on a Kindness Rocks Hunt and Movie Night featuring Minions 3.

  • 2020 CENSUS

Did you know the 2020 Census count impacts federal funding that communities receive each year for programs and services that are critical for schools, students, and younger children? When it comes to schools, the 2020 Census will determine funding for special education, teacher training, technology, school lunch assistance, Head Start and after-school programs.

How can you help? Be part of the solution, be counted because your family matters!

In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you can respond in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail.

    For more information, visit https://2020census.gov/en.html
