We want to let you know that we will hold a vote at Thursday's Community Meeting to add ADDITIONAL EXPENSES to the PTO budget that was approved for this school year. The Additional Expenses are for the placement of classroom-size air purifiers into each classroom and the purchase of replacement filters.
Background: Current SFUSD guidance states that classroom windows and doors will be open to the outside during good air quality day to provide ventilation. Windows and doors will be closed on bad air quality days.
Open doors and windows provide a certain amount of ventilation to classrooms. SFUSD believes that ventilation provided by open doors and windows are adequate for COVID safety. Use of air purifiers improves upon ventilation provided by open doors and windows alone. It is one of the meaningful means to clean air when doors and windows are closed.
Our PTO became aware of a change in SFUSD guidance to allow air purifiers at school sites about a week prior to the start of school in August. Prior SFUSD guidance is that air purifiers are not permitted at school sites. Our PTO leadership discussed the idea of purchasing purifiers for each classroom. We decided that the purchase of the air purifiers to improve the health and safety of all our students is a good use of PTO funds. We also believed that most, if not all, PTO members will support the purchase of the purifiers. However, proper budgeting procedure meant that our PTO Community needs to vote to approve the additional budget expense of the air purifiers prior to purchase.
Current Situation: A Medify MA-112 air purifier was placed in classrooms on Friday August 13. The units are used daily. The purifiers were purchased by a parent and currently loaned to each classroom. The parent will seek reimbursement from the PTO for the purchase if and when the PTO community approves the additional budget for the purchase.
Air Purifier system and costs: The total purchase price is $10,341.10. The purchase includes 20 MA-112 units at a 20% discount and 40% discount to the current price and list price, respectively. Our awesome purchase negotiator also persuaded Medify to include a donation of 20 MA-25 units with the purchase. The smaller MA-25 units will be placed in non-classroom locations. At current prices, we expect the annual cost to buy replacement filters to be between $1,700 and $3,500, depending on the discount we can obtain.
