Keeping Our Students Safe
Did you know? Bikes and e-bikes are amazing ways to get around Alameda, replace short car trips, and help families stay active. A few safety reminders help keep our island community moving safely.
Helmets matter. California law requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet, and kids are much more likely to wear one when adults model the habit too. You only get one head, and helmets are one of the simplest proven ways to reduce serious injuries.
Cyclists using bike lanes are still expected to follow traffic rules. At the three-way stops around Bay Farm, cyclists riding in the bike lane are expected to stop at stop signs. The City even painted "STOP" in the bike lane as a reminder. This is especially important on faster e-bikes, which can take longer to stop and may make it harder to see pedestrians or other riders approaching intersections.
Thinking about getting an e-bike? Some motorized vehicles are marketed as "e-bikes" even though they may not be street legal or may require a driver's license to operate. In California, there have been cases where parents faced legal consequences after allowing children to ride vehicles that were not legally classified as e-bikes, particularly when crashes or injuries occurred. Before purchasing an e-bike for yourself or your child, check Alameda's guide to legal e-bikes and scooters here: City of Alameda E-Bike Guide.
We encourage families to keep biking and rolling around our wonderful island — just be safe about it.
