The PTA hopes that everyone is having an enjoyable Fall Break. We thought this would be a good time to provide an update on some new programs that receive PTA support:
Theater at Bayside Academy
Pied Piper Players brings this educational theater experience to students at Bayside Academy. Students are exposed to the dramatic arts through theater games and exercises, all the while having lots of fun. Classes run through January and end with a friends and family performance. It’s not too late to sign up at the school office!
Pied Piper Players currently offers the following theater classes at Bayside after school:
- Acting and Musical Theater (Grades 3-5): Tuesdays 3pm - 4pm
- Acting and Improv (Grades 6-8): Wednesdays 2pm - 3pm
Virtual Reality Space
The Bayside Academy Virtual Reality (VR) Space has been progressing over the past few months. In September, several classes were given a sneak peek into the VR Space.
VR allows students to go into another environment anywhere in the world. What’s great about it is that they can experience that environment in full 360, looking all around them so that they can imagine themselves actually being there. It provides an opportunity to engage and stimulate the students in ways that were never possible before. VR can be used to enhance many subjects, including English Language Arts, Social Studies, History, Science, Languages, and more.
History lessons that were once dry and boring can now be experienced firsthand through VR. For example, Mr. Spina’s Social Studies class was studying Ancient Rome. One minute they’re reading about Roman history, and the next they put on the VR Headsets and were transported to Ancient Rome and exploring the Colosseum.
The Makerspace opened its door this Fall as a creative space for Bayside K-5 students to design, invent, create and imagine through the use of technology and everyday items. The Makerspace came together through grants, PTA funding, and generous donations from Bayside Academy families. Students have the opportunity to work through the scientific design process and complete engaging, hands-on challenges that align with CA NGSS (The California Next Generation Science Standards).
The Makerspace is always accepting donation items! You will be amazed at what kind of innovative designs our students come up with using discarded household items. For example, the 2nd Grade students had to imagine being stuck on a desert island and had to use common household items, scientific method, and their imaginations to create hats that could protect them from the sun.
Here are some things you can drop off at the office for the Makerspace:
- Toilet paper/Paper towel tubes
- Cardboard boxes
- Wrapping Paper
- Tape (any kind)
- Glue, hot glue guns
- Popsicle Sticks
- Egg cartons
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Legos, blocks, puzzles, Tinker Toys
- Old electronics
- and almost anything else that can be deconstructed, upcycled and repurposed!
