📢 ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Fall Parent Social at Hapa’s Brewing Company last Friday! A special shoutout to our amazing parent volunteers (pictured below!) for organizing such a fun and successful evening, complete with delicious catered food, great drinks, and fantastic conversations among both new and long-time Booksin parents.

🚶‍♀️‍➡️Walkathon (WAT)

Save the date for the 37th annual Booksin Walkathon - Louie’s Highflying Adventure on Saturday, October 19, 2024. In mid-September, we will open sign ups for volunteer positions on Konstella. Once they’re up, please review and sign up for position(s) that interest you. Look under “Committees,” then select “Walkathon Team” on Konstella.

🤫 Silent Auction Volunteers NEEDED!

Our small but mighty Silent-Auction-Asking Team really needs YOUR help! This a great option for someone who wants to help out but needs flexible hours. You can manage tasks via email at any time, and many businesses are available for follow-up in the evenings or on weekends. Plus, not all tasks involve soliciting donations; keeping an organized list of potential donors is also an important part of the role. Even if you can only help for a day, your time is valuable!

➡️You can volunteer for any or all of the following activities now through Friday, October 4th (so a very short commitment!):

1. Emailing businesses to ask for items (initial asks or following up).

2. Calling businesses as a follow up to emails to make sure our email was received.

3. Canvassing an area (ex: the Pruneyard) and dropping off fliers (or asking businesses) for items.   This is a great job even if you just want to help for one day - taking a few hours to drop off fliers in person can be really impactful.

4. Picking up items that have already been committed to the auction.  Note: we may have pick ups through October 18 (the day before the event).
5. Identifying new businesses and adding them to our contact list (for auction team to contact).

Please email fundraising@mybesca.com with any questions or to volunteer.

🥳 Fun with Friends Hosts NEEDED!

Fun with Friends is a really great way to give back to Booksin, spend time with friends, and make new ones!

  1. As a Fun with Friends Host, you'll plan and host an event of your choice. Events can be geared towards adults-only, children, or families. At the Walkathon’s silent auction, people can buy a spot to attend your event. Hosts cover all event costs so that 100% of the auction proceeds directly benefit BESCA.
  2. Need inspiration? Click this link for a list of popular Fun with Friends ideas from previous years. Find an idea you like or create your own unique event. You can even co-host with friends to share the costs and increase the fun! After you sign up, BESCA will contact you for event details (date, time, and location). Sign-ups close on Monday, September 23.
  3. Not ready to host this year? No worries! Just be sure to check out and bid on a Fun with Friends spot during the silent auction.

Thanks for helping make Walkathon a high-flying adventure!

🙂 Classroom Volunteers
Art and Garden classes are in full swing! Schedules are viewable in your class calendar on Konstella. A reminder that all new and returning on-campus volunteers (including chaperoning field trips) must register with San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) before volunteering on campus during school hours.  Not sure if you're cleared? You can check in with Cindy Urenda in the main office.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Girls on the Run (GOTR) NEEDS Coaches for 2025

Parents of 3rd/4th/5th grade girls! Girls on the Run is in need of coaches for the upcoming season. If we are unable to find at least 1 more coach, we will have to cancel the team at Booksin Elementary for the 2025 season.

Girls on the run coaches commit their time to lead a group of 3rd-5th grade girls through a structured 10-week after school program. Coaches help participants build confidence, increase their level of physical activity, and learn essential life skills through the innovative integration of fun activities and impactful community projects. Coaches use a research-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running, to help train participants to complete an end-of-season celebratory 5K. Coaches can be anyone 18-years old or older. You don't need to be a runner, athlete, or have previous coaching experience. All coach training, curriculum books, and materials needed for a successful season and marketing support are provided.

Time Commitment:

  • Season begins the week of March 3rd and runs for 10-weeks with consideration of spring break

  • Season ends with our celebratory 5K on May 17, 2025 @ Vasona Park in Los Gatos

  • Practices occur 2x/week (Tue/Thurs afterschool) for 90 minutes

If you would like more information before committing, please register to attend the upcoming Virtual Info Night this Wednesday, September 18th from 6:30-7:30pm to learn more about coaching and steps for how to bring the program back to Booksin this spring.
