We ask for your continued support of our great school as we enter summer break. Please read the attached information from the Principal Advisory Council (PAC) on how you can advocate for the much needed improvements for our school. 

BVE Community Support Needed!
As you may be aware, every 5 years the Dekalb County School District (DCSD) commissions a Comprehensive Master Plan (CMP). This was most recently done in 2021 and was presented at the February 25, 2022 DSCD Board Meeting. As a part of that report, a Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) score is given to each school with an outline of repairs and modernization that need to be done to each school. This score is out of 100 and a score of <60 is considered “Poor.”

Briar Vista Elementary's FCA score was 57. The primary issues outlined in the report are the HVAC repair / upgrade, Roof replacement, Fire Safety Sprinkler System and Security Vestibule. In this report, Briar Vista’s Roof repairs were listed as an existing SPLOST 5 (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) funded project and the HVAC upgrade was listed as being covered by CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act.

In February, the DCSD School Board adopted the CMP but then changed its decision in favor of funding multi-level priority plans across many facilities across the district. As recently as the May 9th, 2022 DCSD Board Meeting, the board reiterated that these plans do not obligate the board to make the repairs outlined in the CMP.

What does BVE Need?
The Principal Advisory Council (PAC) is asking that all stakeholders in the Briar Vista Elementary Community speak out to advocate for these much-needed improvements to our school. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the HVAC disrepair made it unhealthy and close to unbearable for the staff and children to return to school in the Georgia August heat. The school’s HVAC and Roof needs are physically interconnected.

What can you do?
We ask that during the summer break you reach out to the DCSD School board, DCSD school district leadership and state government asking them to ensure the completion of the much-needed HVAC, Roofing and Security Improvement needs of Briar Vista Elementary.
