Welcome to this Week’s PTA Weekly Press!

Vol I, No 9. March 10, 2020.

Every Tuesday during the school year, you will find CP PTA related information in the PTA Weekly Press.

Before going to this week’s items, know that no one pretends the CV (coronavirus) doesn’t exist.  It's difficult to ignore word of it because we’re told to stay home; avoid crowds; go shopping but can’t find rice or even flour.  Teachers are told “No Wednesday Assemblies.”  But what the heck, let’s assume the dust settles by May and we’ll celebrate Art and Science Day!! So here are this week's items:

  1. Art & Science Day: Chaperone Sign Ups
  2. Panda Parties Update
  3. Pencek & Ms. Chang’s Writing Contest Contestants
  4. Screenagers The NEXT Chapter
  5. Contact Info of PTA Board of Directors
  1. Art & Science Day: Chaperone Sign Ups

Please sign up to chaperone Art & Science Day on Friday, May 1, 2020.  Here’s the link:  A&S Day Chaperone Sign Up

We need up to 4 parents per class to assist a group of approximately 12-15 students. Your role will be to travel with your group to each workshop, assist the workshop leader, help keep the classroom clean, and the students respectful and attentive. Breakfast and lunch provided!

MORNING and AFTERNOON sessions available. Sign up for both if you can chaperone the entire day. Make sure to sign up for your child's homeroom if you'd like to chaperone your child!

Please sign up by Wednesday, March 18.  The link again:  A&S Day Chaperone Sign Up

  1. PTA Panda Parties Update:

Following the San Mateo County Health Recommendations pertaining to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are cancelling all Panda Parties in March 2020 and will provide an update regarding April parties later this month.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to issue any refunds for the Panda Parties purchased. We apologize for the cancellations and we thank you for your continued support and understanding.

  1. Ms. Pencek & Ms. Chang’s Writing Contest Contestants

A huge shout out to these “Magnificent Seven” fifth grade girls of Ms. Pencek and Ms. Chang:

Abigail Li

Felicity Ma

Maddie Lee

Melanie Feng (2 entries .... one written and one art)

Mya Nguyen

Phoebe Lin

Well, OK, so there’s only six girls, but Melanie turned in two entries – so that’s a Magnificent Seven!!  Our students are magnificent because they sacrificed and worked on the writing contest with the theme “Why I Am Glad America Is a Nation of Immigrants.”  The contest is sponsored by the national 13,000+ member American Immigration Lawyers Association and, the winners as well as their teachers receive upwards of $500 for first place and $1000 to the teacher of the first place winner.  The amounts have varied, but always substantial.  Not only that, the first place student plus his or her family member are invited to the annual conference of the lawyers association.  Those conferences are held in places such as New York, Las Vegas, San Diego, Philadelphia, National Harbor, Florida and on and on.  Stayed tuned, College Park parents, to learn the identities of the winners of the contest and why our kids are glad America is a nation of immigrants!

  1. Screenagers The NEXT Chapter

Safe Health permitting:  FREE Community Event! All are welcome.

This latest documentary examines the science of screen time and its impact on teen brain development. Director Delany Ruston delves into the connection of screens and the upsurge of anxiety and stress among our kids. It’s a look at real-life challenges in the digital age while offering parents ideas to support their youth.  A -30- minute discussion will follow. This documentary is a follow-up to the original Screenagers.
