International Earth Day is April 22, and Edison is celebrating with two weeks of schoolwide events, student-led lessons, and hands-on activities. There are LOTS of fun, easy volunteer opportunities to support our Otters; sign up here to help!

MONDAY, APRIL 21

Used Shoe Drive - ALL WEEK
Back by popular demand! We’re teaming up with RoadRunner Sports and All Good Living to recycle all types of used/worn shoes (except cleats and wheelie shoes). Bins available at Edison (front hallway) and on porches 4/21-25:

Recycle-Reuse Cart - ALL WEEK
The recycle/reuse cart will be on the blacktop before school every day. Get a Green Otters sticker for dropping off items! 

  • Regular collection items: used batteries, broken crayons, plastic film, round squeeze pouch lids, dried-out markers
  • APC Farm to Market collection items: plastic bags, rubber bands, produce ties, egg cartons, berry baskets

TUESDAY, APRIL 22 - Happy Earth Day!

Lunchtime Chalk Art
Students will decorate the blacktop at lunch recess with their creative interpretations of what Earth Day means to them. Sign up here to assist.

Trashion Fashion Show 
Start with an old t-shirt and create a haute couture masterpiece out of trash! All grades are encouraged to participate in this school-wide fashion show. Students can work on their t-shirt creations at home or at lunchtime maker workshops.

  • Showtime: 12:45 pm, Edison courtyard
  • Families are invited to attend (sign in at the office first), and volunteers are needed to help organize the fashionistas; sign up here.

FRIDAY, MAY 2

Garbage Car Race
Whose junkyard speedster will cross the finish line first? Students can pick up materials and get engineering help at lunchtime Earth Week Workshops in Room 2. Families are invited to attend (sign in at the office first).

  • 3rd-5th grade race: May 2, 11:45 pm, Edison blacktop
  • K-2nd grade race: May 2, 12:05 pm, Edison blacktop
  • Rules:
    • Students make a car out of ALL reused materials. Must be made from things that would have been thrown away or recycled. OK: glue, tape, paint, rubber bands. Not OK: Legos, old toys, ANY parts of RC cars.
    • Parents should let their child do the bulk of the design/work.
    • The wheel base may not exceed 9 inches.

The Green Otters student club will be visiting classrooms to brush up on 3-stream waste-sorting.
