Dear Edison Family,
To say that 2020 has been a trying year is an understatement. Our community is hurting and our people are exhausted. Given this, the Fundraising Committee, together with Mr. Sahakian and the Edison PTA Executive Board, has decided to cancel our Spring Auction. This was not a decision that we took lightly or made with haste. We held out hope that we could somehow make it work, through a modified or scaled-down version highlighting our kids’ art to auction off and a party over Zoom as we did last spring. After much reflection, careful thought and discussion, we came to the decision that asking our local businesses to donate to our event, and asking our already-overtaxed parents to organize a massive event, is not the path we want to take given the environment of this unprecedented, pandemic year.
The Edison auction traditionally brings in more than 70% of our PTA budget. The fundraiser allows us to fund a reading interventionist, school counselors, the art and garden docent programs, Kindergarten music program, Go Green, supplies and classroom betterment materials and much more. Although PTA funded programs for the current school year will not be affected, we want to ensure we have the ability to provide any support our students may need upon the resumption of school in the Fall, whatever that may look like, in particular the socioemotional, academic and technological support our students will need.
To do that, we are asking our Edison families to consider making a donation to the PTA in lieu of what you would have spent at the auction. We will be hosting a special donation drive later in the Spring to come together and fundraise as a community. Please consider donating now or during that drive to support our school. We also want to recognize the support that our local businesses have provided through auction donations over the years and in the spirit of giving back, we would also like to ask that you support our local businesses as much as you can.
We envision the time in the remainder of this current school year to be a time of healing and hope. As we hold off on a large, celebratory fundraising event, we look forward to coming together as a community in a different way and we cannot wait for the time when we can safely be with each other again and celebrate in person.
Very Truly Yours,
Monica Bell Sloan
Fundraising Board Chair
