During Ability Awareness Week ("AAW"), students will learn that not everyone has the same abilities that they have. Everyday tasks that seem easy may be a challenge for some of their friends. They'll get to experience what it is like to have a visual impairment, a hearing impairment, or have limited mobility. They'll experience this through fun, interactive ability stations, where they'll get to write or draw in a mirrored box, learn the letters of the alphabet in braille, and try doing certain tasks with socks on their hands. Link to description of AAW and the ability stations HERE.
This is an entirely volunteer-led program and we need parent help to make AAW Week a success. Each class will participate during their normal Media Center hours. We need four volunteers from each class to run the four ability stations.
No training is required to volunteer. All of the materials and instructions are included with the ability stations, and you will most likely have an experienced AAW volunteer with you. This is a fun and rewarding event for students and volunteers alike.
