The 2019 Alameda Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Alameda Elks, will be held on February 2nd, 9:30AM-12PM, at Otis Elementary School.

ELIGIBILITY: All participants must be in the 4th-9th grades, and must reside and/or attend school in the city of Alameda.

Depending on the number of entrants, there may be a written as well as an oral spelling bee. The written test will determine a group of 25-30 spellers to participate in the oral bee.

Prizes will be given to the winning spellers. The top winners of the Alameda Spelling Bee will be sponsored to participate in the Alameda County Spelling Bee, to be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 in San Leandro. Based on the outcome, we may send spellers to participate in the Alameda County Elementary Bee (Grades 4-6) and/or the Alameda County Junior High Bee (Grades 7-9).

The top two winners of the two Alameda County bees will be sponsored to participate in the California State Spelling Bee, to be held on May 4th (junior high, in San Rafael) or May 11th (elementary, in Stockton).

We are grateful for the continued support of the Bee's lead sponsor, the Alameda Elks Lodge, as well as our media sponsor, the Alameda Sun.

Cathy Dana and Gene Kahane, Alameda's esteemed Poets Laureate, will serve as Spelling Bee Judges. Eric Kos, co-founder and publisher of the Alameda Sun, will serve as Spell Master.

Registration Deadline: January 31, 2019. For additional information—including rules, practice lists, and other details—please visit
