LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL HARRIS
Dear Owl Families,

School Culture and Climate
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. All across the country schools and community-based organizations will work in unity to address bullying and cyber-bullying. This is done through education and activities. On October 10th Otis will host a parent information night on bullying and bullying awareness. Please join us from 6:30-7:30 in the media center. Free babysitting will be available in Room 102.

Things that we can do together to address bullying:
  • Make friends with someone new (parents and students.)
  • Encourage students to never let someone play or eat or alone.
  • Demonstrates acts of kindness. (Open a door for someone, give someone a compliment, write a kindness note to someone).
Before School Blacktop Expectations
Please remember, there is no supervision on the blacktop before 8:10am. At 8:10am, teachers assigned to yard duty are outside to keep students safe by reinforcing school-wide expectation.
  • Students line up at 8:10am
  • There are no ball games (tether ball, football, kickball, four square, basketball)
  • Students should not be on the grass
  • Family pets may not be on the blacktop at 8:10. This is the official start of the school day.
  • Students may not climb the trees.
We recognize the great fortune of sharing a school playground with a beautiful park. With that comes two sets of rules--school rules and after school and weekend rules. We appreciate your help in reinforcing our school rules during the school day. Safety and supervision are key.

Thank a Teacher
Friday, October 5th is World Teachers' Day. We have wonderful teachers at Otis. Here is a shout out to them!
Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Your Best,

Principal Harris

  • If you been thinking..."others will donate and it will be taken care of..." we actually need YOU! Yes, YOU!! Every dollar counts and makes a great impact on our school community.
  • All donations are tax deductible!
Don't forget to become an Otis PTA member for only $10 per year.  Attending meetings is not required, but your membership shows you care about the school and have a voice to impact change.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL NEWS

Pump up your tires, adjust your helmet, grab your skateboard,
lace up your kicks and get ready for Walk & Roll to School!

On October 4th, Otis will celebrate International Walk & Roll to School Day, with millions of children across the world celebrating walking and rolling to school throughout the week.

We encourage all students and their families to bike, scooter, or skate to school. If that's not possible, the next best thing is to either carpool, or park a few blocks away and walk in.

From 7:50-8:20am, we will have greeting stations with some goodies to hand out to the kids at the High Street, Fountain, and Calhoun gates, and some music playing on the blacktop.

Questions? Contact Alyx Karpowicz.

The Box Top$ Drive has begun!

There are collection containers in every classroom for your Box Top$. The class that collects the most Box Top$ will earn a reward of their choice worth up to $50, and more importantly, will have their class added to the Box Top$ trophy! We aim to earn $1,000 each year through Box Top$ so please bring yours in!

Even if you don't have many, your few added to someone else's makes a lot overall. Also, this is a great way to involve your extended family in supporting Otis without asking for more money.

Classroom containers will be picked up after Thanksgiving break.

A full list of eligible products can be found here: PRODUCTS

Box Top$ expiring? If you have some Box Top$ that are going to expire on 11/1/18 PLEASE contact me and I will send them in before they expire. I will count them toward your class total.

Thank you for all you do to support Otis! If you have questions or expiring Box Top$, please contact Claire Legas at clegas@aol.com.

Join Girls on the Run in Alameda!

Girls on the Run uses the power of running to build healthy, confident girls. Our nationally recognized social/emotional curriculum is designed to build skills in the "6 C's:" Confidence, Competence, Caring, Connection, Character, and Contribution. We keep our team size small (16 girls) to give each girl the chance to speak up, find her voice, and create emotional safety around sensitive lesson topics such as Exploring Emotions and Communicating with Others.

Trained volunteer coaches facilitate our curriculum, which encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.  Physical activity is woven into each practice, to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health.

Each practice consists of a discussion-based lesson, movement-based games, and a running workout. Girls train to complete the end of season Girls on the Run 5K run/walk event in Golden Gate Park, where girls from all of our Bay Area teams come together to cross the finish line!

Grade levels: 3rd, 4th and 5th
Practice days at Amelia Earhart Elementary (open to all Alameda girls): Wednesdays 4:30-5:45pm and Saturdays 9:00-10:15am
