PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

Dear Owl Families,
I want to take thank those of you who were able to come to our Bullying Awareness event and Soul Shoppe volunteer trainings. We have additional parent workshops scheduled for the winter and spring. Again, thank you for being a part of our efforts to create a peaceful and inclusive school community.

Halloween

Through the leadership of a third grade student at Bay Farm Elementary, the AUSD Board of Education has reversed the ban on Halloween. Students may wear costumes and participate in Halloween activities during school hours. Individual schools will coordinate Halloween for their sites. At Otis, the student council will have an active in role in planning school-wide Halloween activities. For classroom activities, please contact your child's teacher.

Costumes must comply with AUSDs' dress code and cannot:
  • Be demeaning to any person or group based on age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or to any individual staff or student at the school
  • Create a safety hazard
  • Include weapons or replica weapons
  • Hide the identity of the student or impair a student's vision or movement (e.g., ability to climb stairs)
  • Include obscenities or references to prohibited substances
Health and Wellness
  • Candy is never more popular than in October. While candy and sweets in moderation is fine, please consider other options for classroom parties and treats for our students.
  • In addition to sweet treats, please be thoughtful of food allergies when providing food for classroom and school events. A significant number of our students and families have food allergies that can be life threatening. For more information, please check out this website.
  • Flu and cold season is upon us. Here is a great link for information on how to stay healthy.
Thank you for helping to keep all of our Owls emotionally and physically healthy!

~Principal Harris
