MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TANYA HARRIS

Dear Owl Families,

I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful autumn weather. It is exciting to say that we are over six weeks into our school year and things are great! I have prioritized my time so that I am in classrooms daily, and I have observed warm and nurturing classroom environments where engaging and rigorous instruction is happening.

This week we launch the 2019-20 PeaceMakers!

With the support of our PTA, Otis is continuing with Soul Shoppe, a social emotional curriculum with a student leadership component. Student leaders, or PeaceMakers, are fourth and fifth grade students who go through six hours of concentrated training. This training prepares our PeaceMakers to support our No Place for Hate efforts through allyship, empathy, and restorative conflict resolution. PeaceMakers are on duty each recess and are identified by their green PeaceMaker shirts.

Teacher Professional Development
This coming Friday, October 11th is a non school day for students. Teachers will be attending a district-wide training focused on restorative practices, and specifically community circles. This training will allow us to deepen our ability to use circles in the classroom in order to build community, teach restorative concepts and skills, and to set things right when there is conflict. Research shows that classrooms that implement circles are calm, and students are seen, heard, understood, and most importantly valued.
Thank You!
Thank you to all who have volunteered during lunch recess. We are always in need of parent volunteers at lunch time. Please let me know if you are interested in running a game or just hanging out with a bunch of awesome kids!

Have a wonderful week!
Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Your Best!

IMPORTANT SCHOOL NEWS AND EVENTS

DINE & DONATE - CHIPOTLE - TONIGHT!!

Make dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support Otis Elementary PTA.

Come in to the Chipotle at 2314 South Shore Center Drive in Alameda on Monday, October 7th between 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

Bring in this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you're supporting the cause to make sure that 33% of the proceeds will be donated to Otis Elementary PTA.

WALK AND ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY  RESULTS

Here are the results of our 2019 Walk and Roll to School Day: we had 146-walkers, 153-rollers, 8-carpoolers, 2-bus/transit, and 33-cars. The drop off zones were notably empty! Great job Owls, let's make this a regular occurrence!

BOX TOP$

Box Top$ are Back! And they are going digital!

Otis collects Box Top$ for Education - a program run by General Mills - to raise money for our school. Our goal is $1,000 per year. You will find Box Top$ on many familiar products. For a full list, look here:

The collection bins for Box Top$ are in the classrooms, so if you have any "clips" - those familiar coupons that are on products - please send them in. I will pick up the bins on Tuesday, Nov. 19th.

The Box Top$ program is transitioning to digital. Now, you download the app to your phone, scan your receipt from the store and it will credit Otis (once you have designated Frank Otis Elementary  as your school. School ID# 415775)

To continue to have a classroom based program, I encourage you to choose the "Give Credit" option (click the star on the app) and put in your child's room number. I will have access to that information and will add it to the clips that are turned in to see which class has the most Box Top$ and gets their name and class on the trophy!

Watch a video explaining the new process: https://www.boxtops4education.com/en/about

Still have questions? Email me directly at clegas@aol.com

Thanks for participating and start clipping and scanning!

FROM THE GREEN TEAM
Did you know that we take plastic bags back in our new "Recycle Row"? Some folks do, as the Green Team has been collecting a LOT- great job! Here's a reminder of what DOES goes in:

  • Newspaper, grocery, produce, and retail bags
  • Toilet paper/paper towel and canned goods or bottled water plastic film/wrap
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Popped air packs
  • Plastic shipping envelopes, and everyone's favorite
  • ZIPLOCK bags!
Here's what we've seen a lot of that DOESN'T go in:

  • Yellow shipping envelopes with the bubble liner inside
  • Frozen food bags (chicken nuggets, frozen veggies, pastas, etc.) unless it has the recycle symbol on it.
Check back weekly for new and easy ways that you can Go Green!

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!

PTA Bulletin Board Help - Are you crafty and would like an outlet for your artistic talents? The PTA Bulletin Board (located next to the Main Office) could use your talent and some TLC! Work with me (Jenny) to keep it updated with events and announcements on a monthly basis. This is a relatively small time commitment for the year.

Otis T-shirt & Swag Contact - We have a supply of t-shirts and sweatshirts at All Good Living (AGL), our vendor located behind The Local. They sell our t-shirts and swag on-line, and we need someone to help us manage this process and bring our supply of shirts to sell at events like Carnival and Owlapalooza. I can give you a warm hand-off with Rose and Chris, the folks that run AGL and work with us to sell our shirts. Not a big time commitment.

If you have the time and inclination to take these on, or just learn more, please let me know! Reach out to me at jenniferdana72@gmail.com. Thank you!!
- Jenny Beck
