LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Owl Families,

On behalf of the entire Otis staff, thank you so much for a lovely Teacher Appreciation Week! The food was yummy, and the gifts and cards were touching. We are so fortunate to be a part of such a generous and caring community!

Open House
We look forward to seeing you all on ThursdayMay 17th from 6:00-7:00pm. Families and friends, prepare to be amazed by all that your children and their teachers have accomplished this year! Open House is a time when students, families, and teachers come together to share experiences from the year. Students give families and guests a tour of their beautiful classroom and share examples of their work and projects. There is also an opportunity to visit teachers from prior years, as well as visit classrooms at the next grade level.

Please keep in mind that there will be many people in and out of each classroom so having an individual conversation with any teacher is nearly impossible. The safety of our students is priority, so please make sure they are supervised at all times and stay inside the building with you.

Safety and Facilities Update
Otis was one of the first schools to install the new emergency alert systems attached to the digital clocks in all classrooms. This Friday, May 18th the system will be tested. This means that during class time alerts will flash across the screen, including "lockdown." Teachers will inform students prior to Friday.

The fence and bathrooms will be installed; however, it will not happen until the winter as the projects still need to go out to bid. Let's hope that the winter weather does not impact the new timeline.

Thursday is Bike to School Day! Everybody get your roll on, but please remember your helmets and safety gear. To keep each other safe please always walk your bike, scooter, skateboard, etc. on the blacktop during school hours.

On June 4th at the Morning Assembly, Otis will be recognized by the Anti Defamation League (ADL) for all of our Anti-Bias, Anti-Bullying, and Inclusion work. This is a great accomplishment and honor. Great work Owls!

Have a wonderful week!
Principal Harris

FROM THE PTA
Last PTA Meeting of the Year
Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m.
Media Center

Please mark your calendar for this very important PTA meeting. We will hear from Cindy Miner Kapelke, an Otis parent and member from AUSD's Homework Workgroup, about the draft Homework Policy currently out for comment. We will do a "year in review" with discussion around community and educational programs supported by PTA, volunteer opportunities and challenges, membership, and budget, and discuss what worked and what didn't. We will also vote on budget 2017-18 amendments, and discuss/vote on a proposed budget for the 2018-19 school year.

If you want to know how all the money raised by the PTA is spent and why, this is the meeting you should attend. Free childcare in Room 102. Please join us.

Thank You!
Beth Aney
Otis PTA President

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM LEADERSHIP NEEDED
Being an Otis Program Leader is a great way to take initiative and contribute to our wonderful school community. It's also a fantastic way to build stronger relationships among staff, teachers, students and fellow Otis parents. These programs and events can only run if there is volunteer leadership, so if you see something on the list that is important to you...please step up!

Many of our Volunteer Program Leadership Roles for the 2018-19 School Year have already been filled! GO OWLS! This leaves us with only a handful more Volunteer Leadership Roles left to fill. To see what positions are still open, see the table below or click HERE. Many of these programs already have great teams in place, they just need fearless leaders.

Contact Otis PTA VP of Programs, Erica Kolodny, at EricaHartono@gmail.com to step up and learn more.
