LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,

I would like to take this time to extend a heart filled appreciation to the entire Otis community. From the Galactic Gala to porta potties and pizza, I can count on this community to make things happen for our wonderful little Owls!

Speaking of wonderful, three Otis Owls were recognized for their wonderful character. Carter Babbitt, Jackson Babbitt, and Devin Crane are the 2017-18 DKG Citizenship Award recipients. Please read what their teachers and peers have to say about them:

  • Carter's teacher loves his deep level of personal integrity. He has a keen sense of humor and is extremely tolerant of others. Everybody loves to be in a group with Carter because of his excellent leadership abilities.
  •  Jackson's teacher loves that he is always super engaged in all lessons no matter how boring they can be. He is always willing to help others and is often fought over for a partner because of his tolerance and kindness to others.
  •  Devin demonstrates her outstanding character and commitment to her classmates, school community, and her family. She's a role model and is polite, positive, and respectful to everyone, even when standing up for injustices.
In addition, one of our Owls, Benji Kapelke has been recognized for outstanding writing skills by the Alameda Elks Lodge. Way to go Benji!!!!

Not only do we have award winning students, our families demonstrate daily what it means to go above and beyond. Beth Aney, our PTA President, and Alicia Schwartz, our Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair, were recognized by the Alameda Education Foundation last week. Beth and Alicia been a crucial support to me and have been instrumental in helping bring our vision of "Everyone Belongs Here" to fruition.

A reminder to all families, please take the Annual Parent Survey for 2017-2018 for Otis and any other school where you have a student attending. Feedback is important and helps us as a community move Alameda forward. The survey closes May 10th. If you have taken the survey already, thank YOU. If not, please take 5 minutes - you can be the difference that makes the difference.

Have a wonderful week!
~Principal Harris

PTA CORNER
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week . We all know our teachers go above and beyond each and every day, so let's be sure to honor them in thoughtful ways. Please be sure to look for communication from your Room Parent about the special things planned for the week.

Last PTA Meeting of the Year - Thursday, May 24
Please join us on Thursday, May 24 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Media Center for a very important PTA meeting. We will review the year (programs, volunteer opportunities/challenges, membership, and budget), vote on budget amendments, and discuss/vote on the proposed budget for next year.  Free childcare in Room 102. Please join us.

PICK UP YOUR GALACTIC WINNINGS!
After the May 7 Monday Assembly there will be a Galactic Gala prize pick-up at the green tables next to Whoo Brew. If you haven't claimed your winnings by then, be sure to stop by! Questions? Contact Jennifer Yip, our Galactic Gala Donations Chair, at jenyip76@yahoo.com

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
We are over the moon to report that the  Otis 2018 Galactic Gala grossed an astounding $90,065!!! This makes the Galactic Gala the highest earning fundraiser EVER in Otis history! The proceeds from this event directly benefits our Otis Owls through PTA supported programming like: Soul Shoppe, STEAM Lab, Assemblies, Art & Garden Docent Programs, field trips, and stipends for teachers to use for purchasing essential classroom supplies and learning tools.

Thank You!
Beth Aney
