Neurodiversity & Disability Month Assemblies - April 22
This April, Franklin is celebrating Neurodiversity & Disability Month. You may have noticed the bulletin board by Ms. La Barre’s room featuring neurodiverse and disabled folks. If not, be sure to check it out with your students. All teachers have been offered the chance to host a classroom lesson on Neurodiversity and Learning Difference with District Counselor Melissa Saunders sometime this month. We hope that will create meaningful conversations in the classroom and at home.
On April 22nd, Franklin will be welcoming Jessica Lehman, a leader in the disability justice movement and recent recipient of The Center for Independent Living’s “Change Maker” Award. Jessica will be leading two assemblies on that day, the first for K-1st grades and the second for 2nd-5th grades. If you’re interested in learning more about the disability rights movements and its origins in the East Bay check out the documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution (2020) available on Netflix (Please note it is rated R). Additionally, if you’re interested in participating in an inclusive playdate this spring at Franklin Park, please reach out to the DEI Committee’s Neurodiversity & Disability Month Group at bethkenny411@gmail.com.

Reduce Plastic Waste with Ridwell This Spring
Franklin Elementary is keeping plastic film out of landfills with Ridwell this spring! To participate in this limited-time recycling drive and celebrate Earth Month, bring plastic film (ziptop bags, grocery bags, bubble wrap, and lots more) to school the week of May 4-9 and Ridwell will make sure it stays out of landfills. It’ll be turned into new decking materials instead! Start collecting plastic film at home now so you have a bunch for the drive.
Curious about recycling more from home, like the school is doing? Visit https://get.ridwell.com/franklin-elementary to learn more about Ridwell—and share the page with family and friends nationwide! You can help the school earn plastic-film pickups for the entire ‘26/’27 school year if 10 new members join Ridwell Pickups or Mail-in through our school’s webpage by May 22.
Got Any Bright Ideas? Questions?
Whether you’re a seasoned Franklin parent or are new to our community (welcome!) we want to hear from you. Please feel free to reach out to any PTA Exec Board member, or email ask@franklinpta.org.
