Dear FASSV parents,
The school council met on Thursday, April 9th to make some changes to the school calendar. As already communicated, the end of the school year will be on Thursday, June 11th as planned and online instruction will resume on April 20th. The remaining question was about the second week of spring break. Three options were on the table:
- School stays open from April 20 until June 11
- School closes one week in May (May 11- May 15)
- Five Fridays off (May 1, 8, 15, 22 and June 5)
A survey was completed by the parents (146 parents participated), the teachers and the staff, asking for their preferred option. A majority of parents (53.6%) preferred option 1, while teachers and staff preferred options 2 or 3.
Parent preferences differed according to grades. Parents from Cycle 1 (Preschool, Pre-K and K) preferred options 2 and 3 over option 1. Parents from Cycle 2 (1, 2 and 3rd) usually preferred option 1, though options 2 and 3 were tied with option 1 for 2nd and 3rd grades, respectively. Cycle 3 (4 and 5th) chose option 1. We used ranked choice voting to assess the final counts.
We tried to find the best trade-off for everyone including our children. Therefore it was decided that the school will be closed on three Fridays (Fri 5/8, Fri 5/15, and Fri 5/22) instead of being closed for two weeks.
We have the insurance from the teacher representatives that it will give them enough time to cover the full French and English curricula as well as update their material for e-learning while also providing children with enough time to digest their learning and have some time away from the computer.
On the parents side, it should be easier for us to adapt our work calendar during three Fridays compare to a full week off.
Let us know if you have any questions.
Samira, Christine and Pierre
