Dear Families,
As you may know from the message shared from the office (copied below), the end of the school year brings new transitions, and we are celebrating Ms. Toni as she retires, and Ms. Rosales, Ms. Melissa, and Mr. Homes as they move on to new adventures.
Please take a moment to leave notes, drawings, and well-wishes for Ms. Rosales, Ms. Melissa, and Mr. Homes. Collection boxes have been set up in the courtyard, immediately around the left corner from the main entrance. If you would like to leave a message but you are not able to come in person, feel free to drop an email to the Grattan PTA (grattanpta@gmail.com) by end of day on Monday, June 8th, and we will be sure that these messages are passed along.
Ms. Toni will be celebrated with a special Grattan tradition for retiring team members - a Grattan Ring-Out. Please join us in the courtyard on Wednesday, June 10th at 12:30 pm to experience this moving tradition.
It is always bittersweet to say goodbye, but let's send these beloved members of our community off with all the Grattan love!
All our best,
Samantha S. Low + Kristin Ryker

Dear Families,
Another year has flown by. So much learning, boundless joy and a whole lot of lost and found sweatshirts and water bottles! As the school year comes to a close I love to sit back and reflect on the transformation of students from that first day back in August to today. There is so much growth built on a foundation of hard work and curiosity. I hope you too, can see the growth in your own students and celebrate with them!
This year is no different than others, the end of the school year means some bittersweet goodbyes to some of our incredible staff members. Ms. Toni, our beloved student advisor, is retiring after 39 years in SFUSD, 37 of those here at Grattan! She will be deeply missed. She’s been a trusted colleague, an advocate for families and a safe place to go when students need some support. As is our tradition when our folks retire, we invite you all to Ms. Toni’s ring-out on the last day of school: Wednesday June 10th at 12:30pm in the courtyard. If you haven’t experienced a Grattan Ring-Out I highly suggest you come - it’s a moving experience.
In addition, as you all know by now, Ms. Rosales, our fabulous Assistant Principal is moving to Los Angeles this summer to be closer to family. Ms. Rosales has been such an asset to our community and she leaves big shoes to fill. Any community she leads will be lucky to have her. We have interviewed and selected someone to take her place. We are just waiting for the candidate to clear through HR before we are able to introduce them to the community.
Ms. Melissa, our incredible school social worker, is also moving on. Ms. Melissa has opted to reduce her working hours to part time which meant she would be placed at a school with a part time social worker allocation. Although we are so sad to see her go, we are sending her off with love on this new adventure! We are welcoming a veteran SFUSD social worker, Natalie Gomez, to fill Ms. Melissa’s vacancy.
Mr. Homes, one of our stellar Special Day Class teachers, will be moving on to SFUSD’s new dedicated special education school that is opening this Fall. Even though he has only been with us a year, Mr. Homes has had such a positive impact on our community, not just his classroom. As many of you know, this is a very challenging position to staff. However, we are hopeful that we have identified someone within our community that will be able to step into this role.
After a year and a half I’m thrilled to let folks know - we have a new school secretary that will start next school year! Her name is Jacqueline Mendoza and is coming to us from Ida B Wells High School. We are excited to begin working with her and relieved that we will have a consistent secretary to support our community.
This is a lot of change! But, with change comes new beginnings and I’m excited and hopeful as I look forward to next school year. In the meantime, I hope you are all able to spend time creating wonderful memories with your families over the summer. These kids grow up so fast, they go from adorable little preschoolers to middle schoolers in the blink of an eye.
In Community,
Ms. Walter
