Grattan’s Statement of Solidarity
Wed, Mar 17 4:32pm

Dear Grattan Community,

We are writing to you to acknowledge and respond to the significant rise of racism and violence towards Asian Americans in our very own neighborhoods and across the country. Since the pandemic began, and increasing over the last several months, there have been numerous attacks on Asian Americans that have ranged from slurs and insults to violent acts that have killed people or left them severely injured. These incidents have left many Asian American community members in fear, creating an atmosphere of distrust and unease. We, the Grattan staff, condemn these and all racially motivated acts of violence, and are committed to the safety and well-being of our Asian American community, many of whom now live in fear of violence and persecution.

Grattan stands for inclusion of all students and families. We are committed to building and fostering a community where all students and families feel welcome and safe, and the voices of historically marginalized folks are lifted. We continue to look for new and more meaningful ways to connect, and build bridges within and beyond our community. Please join us in creating collaborative solutions to end racially motivated violence. Continue to speak with your children about race, difference, and the current anti-Asian sentiment many in our community are experiencing. Here are a few resources we recommend you take a look at:

If you have witnessed or have experienced a hate crime, the organizers of Stop AAPI Hate have offered a set of safety tips. Please refer to them, and share if you find them helpful. We’d like to highlight that the 5th safety tip is to seek emotional support if you experience or witness any act of hate.

The Grattan community stands in solidarity with our Asian American members. Our hearts are with you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Ms. Walter: walterc@sfusd.edu or our school social worker, Ms. Sharon: santoss@sfusd.edu if you have any questions or concerns.

In Community,

Ms. Walter, The Grattan Staff & The Grattan PTA
