I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy! What a way to kick off the 2020-2021 school year. “Welcome Back” to all our returning families and “Welcome To Grattan” for our new families. I know there are a million and one questions about what school is going to look like and how “Back to School” will unfold. I have some answers, but not all (yet)! I am hopeful there will be more clarity in the coming week. There is a lot of information included below so please find a cozy corner to sit back, read, and process it all.
First and foremost, all families must sign up for Parent Vue. If you have not done so already please do. This is where you will be able access all sorts of information, change contact information, request computers, hot spots, etc. It’s vital that we have 100% of families signed up and active on ParentVue. Ms. Karen, firstname.lastname@example.org, is your contact for support with ParentVue.
With regard to technology, SFUSD is going to be loaning out devices for PK-5th grade! This is different from last Spring when it was just 3-5th grade. PK-2 will be receiving touch screens that are already configured with needed apps. Third grade and up will receive a chromebook. If you already have a dedicated device (that supports current apps and things like zoom) for your student(s) we ask that you use that. If not, please use this form to request a device via ParentVue. If you borrowed a device in the Spring and it did not work well please fill out the form to request a new device. The district will also be loaning hotspots to those who do not have internet and need access. You will use the same form to request a hotspot. Distribution of devices will occur next week at Grattan - please see the distribution plan below.
One thing to note is there is a chance we will not have enough devices initially. Please know SFUSD is committed to fulfilling all the needs but there may be a delay as they continue to work around the clock purchasing and configuring the devices.
We are pooling resources from Grattan’s PTA, school site, and central office partners to create a “goodie bag” of supplies for each child that is grade level appropriate. These will also be picked up during our distribution days.
We will be distributing materials at Grattan next Wednesday August 12th and Thursday August 13th from 1-3PM. You will be assigned a specific window based on your last name. Information about that will be forthcoming later this week. We ask that you leave children at home if at all possible. This is a quick pick-up not a time to socialize. You will need to wear a mask in order to enter school grounds.
As you can imagine coordinating 450+ student supply bags and technology distribution for several hundred will be a heavy lift. Please sign up on Konstella to support this project. If you are new to Grattan and have not yet signed up for Konstella, our major PTA - Family communication platform, please do so. You should have received an email to join already, if not please email me, email@example.com and I will make sure we get you signed up. We are looking for a crew of volunteers on Friday to help sort materials and an even larger group on Tuesday and Thursday of next week to help with distribution.
Fall Learning Plan
SFUSD’s plan for Distance Learning can be found on the SFUSD website or on our Grattan website. This will guide our work in the coming weeks as we seek to create meaningful learning opportunities for our students.
Many families have continued to reach out and ask how they can support the Grattan Community! First off, thank you! It will take all of us working together to get through this and support our children. One of the immediate needs of some of our families is grocery store gift cards. I know many donated in the Spring and it was much appreciated and made a tangible difference for families. We are in the process of creating a Go Fund Me to continue to raise money for this. Please look for that information later this week.
If you did not get a chance to watch the video reviewing the GASP family survey from last week, please do so. GASP is committed to working with families and creating the best possible support given our circumstances.
Back to School Informational Meeting
Please join me next Tuesday evening August 11th at 7PM (via zoom, link forthcoming) to learn about the latest updates from SFUSD and Grattan regarding Back to School and our Distance Learning plan. If you are unable to attend, the presentation will be recorded for you to watch at a more convenient time.
How to Set Your Child Up for Success
Join us next Thursday August 13th at 7PM (via zoom, link forthcoming) for a discussion with Ms. Ellingson about how to kick off Distance Learning and set your child (and let’s face it us parents as well) for sucess. We will discuss ideas about how to create an ideal learning space (in already small spaces), support independence, etc., as well as hearing from one another about what worked well.

I know this is a lot! It’s daunting to be honest. Yet, I’m also hopeful and optimistic that we are going to make this the best situation it can be given the circumstances. My motto this year is, “One foot in front of the other!” and my goal is to be as concise as possible with you all as we roll out plans. I understand the information overload. All of my letters to the community will be archived on our Grattan website. You will also be able to find communications on Konstella.
