May 4th is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. It is easy to know when your child needs help dealing with a fever or a broken bone, but mental or behavioral health problems can be harder to handle. The tricky part of parenting is knowing when your child’s behavior or mood is usual for the stage of development they are in and when it is beyond the norm and in need of help. Fifty percent of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14. Engaging children and youth in conversations about emotions normalizes mental health and helps debunk the stigma often attached to mental illness. If you are worried about your child’s emotions or behavior, a school mental health practitioner is available to help. School psychologists, school counselors, and in some cases school social workers are assigned to every CMS school. Additional behavioral health resources for parents are available here: https://www.smore.com/dzy7w

Mental Health Awareness Day was developed to raise awareness about the importance of children's mental health, to let people know that positive mental health is important for a child’s healthy development, to help people realize that it is okay to get help, and to let people know where they can go for help. On this day, CMS Student services staff and others at school will be wearing green, the official color of National Children’s Mental Awareness day. The color green is known to have positive body and mind effects such as promoting calmness, comfort, and relaxation. Children’s Mental Health Matters!
