Dear Hillcrest Families,
Halloween is next Wednesday, and we'll have our traditional Halloween parade at 12:30 pm. Room parents will provide information on any additional celebrations that your class may be having. Parents are invited to view the parade, and school dismissal will be at 1:15 (the regular Wednesday schedule).
Students should wear regular clothing to school and bring their costumes to change into later in the day. Please ensure that your child's costume is non-violent, non-gory, culturally sensitive, and school-appropriate. No toy weapons will be permitted.
This short video explains through the eyes of six young women how "cultural" costumes can be hurtful and can be an inadvertent racial and ethnic slight. In light of the emerging research on how schools across the country are seeing increased overt expressions of racism given the political climate, this video educates us all on how we must commit to culturally responsive decisions that honor all of our students and their cultural identity. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us.
Thank you, and Happy Halloween!
