Spirit Week & Halloween - costumes
Fri, Oct 18 11:54am

Dear Hillcrest Families,

Spirit Week is next week (October 21 - 25th), and our traditional Halloween parade is the following Thursday, October 31st at 12:30 pm.  Room parents will provide information on any additional Halloween celebrations that your class may be having.  Parents are invited to view the parade, and school dismissal will be at 1:20 on Halloween.

Both Spirit Week and Halloween can involve costumes; for Halloween, students should wear regular clothing to school and bring their costumes to change into later in the day.  Please ensure that your child's costume is non-violent, non-gory, culturally and religiously sensitive, and school-appropriate.  No toy weapons will be permitted.

This short video explains through the eyes of six young women how "cultural" costumes can be hurtful and can be an inadvertent racial and ethnic slight.  In light of the research on how schools across the country are seeing increased overt expressions of racism and intolerance given the political climate, this video educates us all on how we must commit to culturally responsive decisions that honor all of our students and their cultural identity.  Please extend this consideration to religious and faith traditions as well. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us.

FYI, the Spirit Week themes are: Monday - Pajama Day; Tuesday - Character Day/Super Hero Day; Wednesday - Crazy Hair Day/Wacky Day; Thursday - Hobby Day; Friday - Future Fridays

Thank you, and Happy Halloween!
