Update on AB 1912 regarding school closure process:
We know that many in our community are interested in the school closure process, so we are providing a news update on Assembly Bill No. 1912, which would require a school district under financial distress to conduct an equity impact analysis before approving the closure or consolidation of a school.
Although this bill would not reverse the Oakland Unified School District’s February 2022 decision to close a number of schools, including grades 6-8 at Hillcrest, it would require more analysis and public involvement for decisions to close schools in the future. You can read the Legislative Counsel’s Digest and find the text of the bill here.
The California state legislature has passed AB1912 and the bill is now waiting for Governor Gavin Newsom's signature. If he signs it, the bill will become law immediately and would remain in effect through July 1, 2028. To express your opinion on this bill, you can contact Governor Newsom’s office here or (916) 445-2841.
