Hillcrest Families:

Recently, an issue regarding water safety at McClymonds High School was brought to OUSD leadership. While remedying the issue at McClymonds, OUSD began inquiring about District wide testing through a state-funded program administered for Oakland by East Bay MUD (EBMUD). However, while these efforts are in progress, the District made the decision to begin proactively testing the water at all of our school sites and child development centers.

Of the 47 schools tested so far, elevated levels of lead - as determined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - were found at the following eight elementary school sites.

  • Brookfield
  • Burckhalter
  • Fruitvale
  • Glenview (Santa Fe Campus)
  • Joaquin Miller
  • Laurel
  • Thornhill
  • Encompass Academy

Of note, the elevated lead readings were not school-wide, but found at one or two isolated faucets or fountains. School leaders were notified of the issue by the Buildings and Grounds Department and/or Risk Management and the indicated water sources were immediately taken out of service and replaced. The identified water sources currently pose no health risk to school communities.

The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority and the District will continue to monitor lead levels at all of our school sites and child development centers going forward.

As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
