Bay Area Chess has become a popular, free lunch-time activity at Vargas. Our volunteers Carey, Elzbieta, Grace, Harshal, Simi, and Sukhi have witnessed the students enjoying their lunch break as they embark on this new challenge together. Some students team up to contest the parents! We can’t imagine a better community building activity and hope you can join us some day, if time allows, to enjoy it yourself. You can sign up here if interested.
21st Annual MVWSD Interscholastic Chess Tournament at Landels Elementary on Sunday, April 21, from 10:00am to 4:00pm
This district-wide chess tournament, hosted at Landels Elementary, is sponsored by PTAs. It is open to all MVWSD students, and it’s free to participate. Please register by April 20 if your child wishes to be part of a friendly competition with others who share their joy in strategic thinking. Questions about the event can be directed to Jonas Klittmark, tournament director, at mvwsdchess@gmail.com.
Lawrence Hall of Science Festival – Thursday, April 4 (evening)
The PTA is bringing UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science to Vargas for a "Build, Engineer, and Invent!" festival. We need more help to accommodate the entire Vargas community and invite you to become an instructor for only 50 minutes. We know we have some passionate engineers in our community. Please share your excitement for new inventions with our Golden Owls and sign up here to volunteer for one or both sessions. If you choose the second session, come observe the first Volunteer Team during their session. No need to attend the early training.
Training: 4:30pm
First session: 5:00-5:50pm
Second session: 6:00-6:50pm
There will be a food truck (Waffle Roost) on campus throughout the event serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
International Festival – Thursday, April 18 (5-7pm)
Our 2nd annual International Festival is coming up. This is one of our biggest events of the year, where we invite our incredibly diverse community to share their culture. Thus far, we count 15 countries, but we know we can do more. If you are interested in representing a country, please sign up here. Let’s travel around the world together and learn about as many countries as possible. Any typical food or tradition you can share will make our event more interesting.
Vargas Night @ SJ Earthquakes vs LAFC – Thursday, May 4, starts 4:15pm
Join your fellow Vargas families and watch the SJ Earthquakes take on LAFC at Levis’ Stadium.

We already know of many third graders attending the game and would love to see more of Vargas cheering on the local SJ Earthquakes. Let’s make some noise together for our team!
Spring Afterschool Activities
Many of our Spring afterschool classes begin this week! Visit our website for details; here is a snippet of what’s available! We have something for each class (K-5).

- Need to get some of that energy out? There’s basketball (prorated rates apply), soccer, and Run for fun
- Interested in STEM? Check out Lando engineering or Brick Tech with LEGO (multiple classes)
- Want to build on your Mandarin? Hai Chinese can help.
- Interested in math puzzles, math games, and problem solving? Check out Mathletes in Training.
As a reminder, limited scholarships are available. Classes that don’t meet enrollment requirements are subject to cancellation. If you would like your child to join a class, we would encourage you to sign up this week to not lose the opportunity for the last trimester.

Our Student Council team has prepared an unforgettable Spirit Week. Thank You to our creative teachers Mrs. Dux and Mrs. Ragas for always coming up with inspiring ideas to add more sparks to school life.
Monday: Green and Gold Day! Wear your Vargas gear or green and gold
Tuesday: Vacation Day! Dress like you're going on vacation - NO BATHING SUITS
Wednesday: Character Day! Wear something with your favorite character or dress like your favorite character
Thursday: Rainbow Day/ What is your superpower Day - we will have a schoolwide activity for students to choose their superpower

El ajedrez Bay Area se ha convertido en una actividad popular y gratuita a la hora del almuerzo en Vargas. Nuestros voluntarios Carey, Elzbieta, Grace, Harshal, Simi y Sukhi han sido testigos de cómo los estudiantes disfrutan su almuerzo mientras se embarcan juntos en este nuevo desafío. ¡Algunos estudiantes se unen para competir con los padres!
