Hello Golden Owl Community-
We are filled with gratitude for our vibrant and diverse community! Within two hours, we visited and had a taste of 23 countries (Bangladesh, Canada, China, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Germany, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, and The United Kingdom. Thank You to our dear Jennifer and team for organizing this incredibly enriching event for all of us and Thank You to all the families who shared a highlight of their home, culture, history, and favorite foods to let us experience all the benefits of variety. It’s evenings like these that make us all shine together. We loved seeing everyone there and taking a trip around the world together. As our guest speaker Jose Antonio Vargas wisely concluded, everyone contributes. It’s that collective spirit that builds strong communities.
STEM+ Families Take-Home STEM Kits RAFFLE – Submit one entry by Monday, April 22
Reminder: Golden Owls, don’t forget to submit one completed STEM kit entry by Monday, April 22 for a chance to win a fun prize! We have extended the deadline for the raffle so you can explore science, technology, engineering, and math with the five hands-on activities for another weekend. Try out Garden in a Glove, Alka-Rockets, Bug Vacuum, Tiny Catapult, and the Copper Tape Flashlight and send a picture of your favorite project to Sandy at treasurer@javargaspta.org. Thanks to the National PTA’s STEM+ Families Science Festival program sponsored by Bayer Fund, every Vargas student received a take-home STEM kit before Spring Break.

There is still time to order your child’s artwork through Square1 Art. Treat yourself to a keepsake item for Mother’s or Father’s Day or share it with family members.

21st Annual MVWSD Interscholastic Chess Tournament at Landels Elementary on Sunday, April 21, from 10:00am to 4:00pm
This district-wide chess tournament, hosted at Landels Elementary, is sponsored by PTAs. It is open to all MVWSD students, and it’s free to participate. Please register by April 20 if your child wishes to be part of a friendly competition with others who share their joy in strategic thinking. Questions about the event can be directed to Jonas Klittmark, tournament director, at mvwsdchess@gmail.com.
Lunchtime Chess on Wednesdays
We have a few more weeks of free lunchtime chess on Wednesdays with coach Wolfgang from 12-12:45pm. Bay Area Chess (BAC) brings all the boards and pieces. Surprise your Golden Owl(s) during your lunch break and make special memories together at Vargas!
Vargas Night @ SJ Earthquakes vs LAFC – Saturday!, May 4, starts 4:15pm
Join your fellow Vargas families and watch the SJ Earthquakes take on LAFC at Levi’s Stadium.

Spring Afterschool Activities
Many of our Spring afterschool classes have begun! Visit our website for details; here is a snippet of what’s available! We have something for each class (K-5).

- Need to get some of that energy out? There’s basketball (prorated rates apply), soccer, and Run for fun
- Interested in STEM? Check out Lando engineering or Brick Tech with LEGO (multiple classes)
- Want to build on your Mandarin? Hai Chinese can help.
As a reminder, limited scholarships are available. Prorated rates offered for classes that have already begun. If you would like your child to join a class, we would encourage you to sign up this week to not lose the opportunity for the last trimester.
