🐬 Dolphin Digest 🐬 Extra Recess! Find Out How...
Sun, Oct 13 9:23pm

Dear Lafayette Community,

I hope you've had a good weekend. Tomorrow is Indigenous People's Day, so school's closed and the weekend continues... at least for the kids!

Exciting news: Last weekend's PTA parking fundraiser brought in $6,480 from concert-goers (and a few neighbors)! Big thanks to Yusuke Wada and Tory Francisco for leading, and to all who helped. See pics of enthusiastic volunteers and our FULL parking lot toward the end of this newsletter.

If you missed last Wednesday's PTA meeting, you can view the slides here. One topic of note: Per SFUSD's current list for potential school closures, nearby Sutro Elementary would be closed, with students reassigned in 2025/26 to Lafayette, Alamo, or (for Cantonese biliteracy program) the Chinese Immersion School. Visit SFUSD's RAI page to follow the decision-making timeline and attend the next Board of Education meeting (Nov. 12). Whatever happens next year, we will be ready to welcome lots of new Dolphins. We're also slated to become a Transitional Kindergarten site!

Another note from the meeting: Principal Kassebaum asked for everyone's cooperation in following the school's longstanding (but not always enforced) "no dogs" policy on school grounds -- including the schoolyard and building.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ Spirit Day - October 16th

October 16th (Wednesday) is LGBTQ+ Spirit Day! Since 2010, the National LGBTQ+ Spirit Day has encouraged students, staff and schools to wear purple and take a pledge to put an end to anti-LGBTQ+ bullying.

On Wednesday, October 16th:

  • Wear purple to raise awareness about Anti-LGBTQ+ Bullying, and to show support against this type of bullying
  • Come have lunch in the Wellness Center with Ms. Emily to celebrate RAINBOW pride

🍂 HELP NEEDED - Autumn Carnival - October 26th

Lafayette's beloved Autumn Carnival is coming up on October 26th (Saturday). Our schoolyard will be open to the public, so invite your friends!

We need LOTS of help to make this fun event happen. Donate stuffies for prizes (Wed/Fri this week)! Volunteer for a shift (or more) on the day! Bring a donation for the cake walk! Help with your class's teacher table!

Volunteer sign-up sheet is HERE!

Volunteer shifts are designed to leave you plenty of time to enjoy the event with your family.

Help with:

  • Setup before the event
  • Games/activities/prizes during the event
  • Cleanup after the event (for the true heroes)

You can also bake or buy a (nut-free) donation to the Cakewalk.

Details of games and activities will be provided on the day of the event. If you can only do 1 hr, we can still use your help. Just email Autumn Carnival Cochairs Mariela (mariela.pauli@gmail.com) or Priscilla (priscillalindsey81@gmail.com).

Extra high-fives to the following classrooms, which have 2 or more parents signed up to volunteer:

  • Ms. Carpenter's class
  • Ms. Young's class
  • Ms. Chue's class
  • Mr. Cuevas's class
  • Ms. Martinez's class
  • Ms. Rolph-Morales's class
  • Ms. Hubbell's class
  • Mr. Kent-Uritam's class
  • Ms. Huang's class

Thank you ALL in advance for your participation and time. We are super excited to get the party started!

The Autumn Carnival is collecting gently used stuffies for the game prizes! We will be at our Witch's table at drop off time to take your donations and have the volunteer signup sheet available for those who want to keep on giving.

Dates of Stuffies donation (enjoy some hot cider!)

  • Wed Oct 9th at drop off time
  • Fri Oct 11th at drop off time
  • Wed Oct 16th at drop off time
  • Fri Oct 18th at drop off time

STREET LIFEGUARDS

Come out from 7:40 to 8:00am to help encourage drivers to be on their best behavior! All you need to do is give a friendly reminder to drivers whenever you see dangerous behavior. As a community, we can protect each other by NOT double-parking or jaywalking on any streets near school.

YARD MONITORS

It's a fact: More adults on the yard = less chaos at recess. Can you help? Time commitment is 2 hours a week. We need volunteers daily, but especially for Tuesday and Thursday from 11 to 1. Reply to this email to get started!

VOLUNTEER READERS

All you need is patience and 30 minutes once a week, and you're qualified for this role reading 1:1 with students for extra help. Sign up to be a volunteer reader!

LOST & FOUND HELPERS

Help organize, look for name labels, and dispose of forgotten lunches... so glamorous! Flexible schedule, but this would be great for someone who has a little time after morning drop-off most days to check for names, and who can occasionally spend a little more time straightening things up. Reply to this email to get started!

🗳️ Voter Info - Proposition Endorsements from California PTA

For the November 5, 2024, Statewide General Election: California State PTA, or CAPTA, takes positions on statewide ballot measures that have the potential to significantly impact the lives of California’s children, youth, and families.

CAPTA supports each of the following four measures slated for inclusion on the ballot for the November 5, 2024, Statewide General Election.

  • YES on Prop 2 - $10 billion for school bonds
  • YES on Prop 3 - Marriage equality
  • YES on Prop 4 - $10 billion for climate protection
  • YES on Prop 5 - Affordable housing

Studies were undertaken to research the content, background, impact, and PTA authorities associated with each ballot measure; links to these study reports are shown on CAPTA's website, along with links to the ballot measures as posted by California’s Secretary of State.

Download the PDF of CAPTA's 2024 Ballot Measures Flyer to share and advocate locally.

"It’s no surprise that older people have a harder time taking care of their homes. Whether it’s weeding, clearing clutter, cleaning hard-to-reach areas, flipping a mattress, seniors often don’t have the strength, energy or stability to handle these chores.

"That’s where 'One Hard Thing' comes in. One Hard Thing, a project of the Golden Gate Village (GGV), matches able-bodied volunteers with Village members needing help with the difficult chores they cannot handle on their own... [READ MORE IN RICHMOND/SUNSET BEACON]"
