🥟 Sign up by September 16th to volunteer for the Multicultural Night Market 🥟

Our third annual Multicultural Night Market is coming up on September 23rd from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in Lafayette's yard.

Please sign up to bring dishes and/or volunteer by no later than Wednesday, September 16. This is a free event, but it does not happen without you! We need potluck dishes and event volunteers — from setup and cleanup to food service and activities. I know we can meet (and beat) this year’s goal of 75 dishes and 6 activity tables.

This is a family affair! Feel free to bring grandparents into the mix, and if you’ve got a middle schooler or high schooler, this is a great way for them to get those volunteer hours.

Our yearly pre-order shop is open here! This may be the only chance to pre-order this year, so don't miss it!

Orders must be placed by midnight on September 25th. When ordering, please note a name and classroom in the "add a note to seller field". All orders will be screenprinted locally in one big batch in October and delivered directly to classrooms in early November.

When: Sunday September 27th beginning at 8:30 am for the 5k and 9:15 for the 1 mile

🚗 Volunteers needed for parking fundraiser 🚗

Our Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Parking Fundraiser is coming up first weekend in October and we need volunteers. Come stand around, help take Venmo/Square payments, and direct concert goers to a parking spot. That's it! 
 
How many volunteers do we need? 
A lot! Shifts are two hours each and we need a minimum of 2 volunteers per slot.  If you know of any high schoolers that have any volunteer obligations - this is a slam dunk to knock out those hours.
 
Where is this?
This year we have TWO parking locations: Lafayette's yard (Fri, Sat & Sun) and 750 25th Avenue (Sat & Sun).

This Week at Lafayette

It was another full and exciting week at Lafayette! Behind the scenes, our staff continued the important work of strengthening teaching and learning across our school. This week, our Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) held its first meeting of the year, bringing staff leaders together to begin identifying areas for growth and exploring ways we can continue improving instructional practices for the benefit of each and every student. A huge shout-out to our Assistant Principal, Ms. Yin, and Instructional Coach, Ms. Price, for facilitating and leading this important work!

We also kicked off this year’s Friday Splash Awards, one of our favorite opportunities to celebrate students who are making positive contributions to our school community. Throughout the year, we look forward to recognizing students for the many ways they demonstrate kindness, responsibility, perseverance, leadership, and what it means to be a positive member of the Lafayette community. Join us on the yard during Friday morning intake to see it firsthand!

We’re also excited to welcome Elliott Peck, our new Designated English Language Development (ELD) Teacher, who began working with students this week. Ms. Peck will provide targeted, small-group instruction throughout the year for identified multilingual learners who benefit from additional support in developing their English language skills. We’re thrilled to have this additional layer of instructional support available to our students!

There is plenty to look forward to in the weeks ahead, so mark your calendars! Our Multicultural Night Market is September 23, followed by our Autumn Carnival on October 24. These are wonderful opportunities to come together, celebrate our community, and have some fun! Stay tuned for details.

Finally, please stay on the lookout for information about an upcoming joint meeting of our English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC) and School Site Council (SSC). We’ll be seeking family and community members interested in serving as council members, and all members of our community will be welcome to attend and participate. These groups are an important way for families to have a voice in our school’s programs, priorities, and continued growth. More information coming later this week.

Splash Awards

Please join me in celebrating our Splash Award winners from this week and last! These students were recognized for modeling positive behavior and making meaningful contributions to our school community, whether in the classroom, on the yard, or in their interactions with peers.

Behavior Expectations

This week, Ms. Yin and I continued reviewing our schoolwide behavior expectations with students, holding assemblies for our TK/K and 1st/2nd grade students. These assemblies complemented the in-class presentations we held with our 3rd–5th grade students last week.

Our goal is to build consistent expectations and shared language across our entire school, helping students understand what positive behavior looks like in different settings and fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for everyone.

Upcoming Assessments & Screenings

Throughout September, our Kindergarten teachers will administer the Kindergarten Readiness Inventory (KRI). This brief assessment helps teachers understand each student’s early skills and strengths so they can plan instruction and support. The KRI takes place during the regular school day and requires no preparation at home.

Initial ELPAC testing will take place September 15–17 for newly identified multilingual learners. Students will be pulled from class briefly to complete this assessment, which helps us understand their current English language proficiency and plan appropriate English Language Development supports.

Hearing and vision screenings for Kindergarten, 2nd, and 5th grade students (as well as students referred by teachers) will take place on September 28.

Dental Screenings for TK and Kinder classes will take place on Friday, October 2nd. Students will bring home consent forms within the next few weeks. TK students must submit an active consent form to be screened and/or then receive fluoride varnish, all done the same day. Kindergarten students will receive a passive consent form. Parents or legal guardians must provide in writing if they choose to opt out, otherwise we will be screening that student.

Lost & Found

• Next time you’re on campus, swing by the lost and found near the auditorium to see if you recognize any of your student’s belongings. Don’t forget to label EVERYTHING.

Repeated Reminders:

• Enrichments have started! Enrichment Pick-Up: Please meet your student on time at the northeast gate on 36th Avenue, near the bike racks.

• Sign Up for Stop, Drop, & Go! ASAP

• Please read the new SFUSD Lost, Damaged, or Stolen Chromebooks Letter to Families.

• In the morning, use Stop, Drop, and Go on Anza Street for a safe and efficient morning drop-off. Please do not park or drop-off in the white bus zone, double park, or allow students to exit on the opposite side of the street. This is for the safety of your students!

• After school, our play structure is reserved for YMCA and RNC programs. Because these programs lease our facilities after the school day, students who are not enrolled should not use the play structure after dismissal for liability reasons. We’ve heard that this hasn’t been communicated in the past, but for the safety and security of our students in aftercare, we ask you to find alternate afternoon play areas. Cabrillo Playground, just down the street, is a great alternative! Thanks for your understanding.

• Please walk bikes and scooters while on the school yard to help keep everyone safe.

• Complete the Multipurpose Family Income Form (MFIF)

• By completing the annual MFIF through SchoolCafe.com, you're helping bring additional resources to our school, regardless of your family's income.Learn more at sfusd.edu/MFIF.

Field Trip Chaperone Update (New Requirements!)

* We’ve heard that some families are having difficulty accessing or navigating these new requirements. Thank you for your patience as we work to connect you with the appropriate support.

SFUSD has updated its field trip chaperone requirements to support student safety.

Parent/guardian chaperones must now complete:

1. Megan’s Law clearance

2. Mandated Reporter Training (approximately 55 minutes total)

Non-parent/guardian chaperones must also complete an SFUSD LiveScan background check before the trip.

All requirements must be completed before chaperoning a field trip.
