🐬 Dolphin Digest: Ready, Set, READ!
Sun, Mar 2 8:43pm

Dear Lafayette Community,

Thanks to everyone who jumped into action last week to push back on the cuts the district wants to make at Lafayette. As the plans for next year's school budget solidify, we at the PTA (that includes you!) have the important role of working closely with the school's staff to do the best we can to support all of our students. We'll share more information as the situation develops.

Please save this important date: Wednesday, March 12th, come to the PTA meeting at 6:00-7:30pm. The agenda will include a community meeting where Mr. K will discuss the staffing and budget allocation, and this will be a time to ask questions and share concerns.

I hope everyone has fruitful parent-teacher conferences this week. As Mr. K has already mentioned in an email, the school day will end early this week at 12:50 (or 12:40 for kindergarten) every day. The only after-school enrichment classes this week are with Creative IQ; all others will resume next week. After-school care providers YMCA, RNC, and KCA will start an hour earlier to cover the earlier dismissal time.

💰 Annual Give Campaign Reaches $115k!

Our Annual Give Campaign keeps stretching for that $125k goal! Last week, we heard that more funds came in, bringing us to a total of $115k. AMAZING! Endless thanks to everyone who has donated so far. Every dollar counts.

📚 Book Donations Needed for 2nd/3rd Grade

Some classrooms are seeking book donations for 2nd and 3rd grade! Chapter books and graphic novels preferred. Parents or kids can bring books to Room 110, Ms. Scully's classroom. Thank you!

🏆 African American Honor Roll - March 4 @ 6pm

The entire Lafayette community is invited to celebrate our 2025 African American honorees. This special evening on March 4th at 6pm in the Lafayette auditorium will include:

In order to plan for the evening, we kindly ask that you RSVP here.

❤️‍🩹 School Social Work Appreciation Week - March 3-7

Lafayette is fortunate to have a dedicated and caring school social worker in Emily Newman. If you've ever stepped into her office, you have seen that Emily goes above and beyond to create a welcoming, accepting, calming atmosphere that sets kids at ease.

March 3-7 is School Social Work Appreciation Week. Let's show her how much we appreciate all she does to help students thrive at Lafayette! Emily would surely love a handmade card or any token of appreciation. Students (or their grown-ups) can drop these off at the school office.

📖 Ready, Set, READ! The Read-a-thon is THIS WEEK

Each year, the Lafayette Read-a-thon celebrates our community of readers while raising money for our school.

This year’s Read-a-thon Week is Monday, March 3rd through Sunday, March 9th. Please plan to maximize your student’s reading time this week, and help them sign up sponsors among family, friends, and neighbors. Everyone who turns in a reading log will get a prize!

If they haven't already, your students will receive their reading logs and pledge forms this week from their classroom teachers. New this year: In response to popular demand, you can use an online fundraising option instead of the old paper pledge form! It's super quick to create your student's fundraising page, and then you can text their link to friends/family or share on socials!

A bunch of our young readers already have their pages set up, and as of this email, they've already raised nearly $7,000!

Happy reading,

📷 Lately at Lafayette (photos)

Our neighborhood book swap was a great success! Nearly 40 houses set out books to share, and we saw lots of Lafayette friends out there getting new books just in time for the Read-a-thon.

One of the major things the PTA funds is field trips. In February, the 5th graders went to Aquatic Park and learned a ton about marine life and how humans relate to the health of our oceans. And everyone got to row a boat to collect plankton!

As always, thank you to all of the grown-ups who came through for Stop, Drop and Go this week!

Graduation Lei Source, Recommended by a Lafayette Family

We have our first recommendation for ways to celebrate our 5th graders as they complete elementary school! A Lafayette family recommended Briana Louie for custom "graduation leis." Order here or use the above QR code from Briana's flyer.

As we mentioned last week: The families of 5th graders will soon be looking for ways to celebrate as their kids complete the final year of elementary school. 😢 Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for how to celebrate them? Graduation lei sources, sweet traditions, etc? We're happy to share them in the Dolphin Digest, so bring it on!

Thanks for reading this week.

Go Dolphins! 🐬
