PTA Leaders Letter to Superintendent Regarding AI Usage In SFUSD

Several PTA leaders and parents from across the district recently sent a letter to Superintendent Maria Su asking for greater clarity, transparency, and community engagement around how SFUSD approaches AI. You can find the letter in it's entirety HERE and below are some main points:

• We're asking that adoption of AI be driven by evidence, student interests, and a clear understanding of each tool's benefits and risks.
• We named Amira, the district's literacy screening tool, as an example of why clearer standards are needed, since parents had trouble getting clear answers about how student data is collected, retained, and shared.
• We have asked the district to clarify its policies on governance, evidence of educational benefit, student data privacy, and how families will be informed and involved.
• If those answers aren't yet available, the signers would support a short-term pause on new student-facing AI tools while a framework is developed.

We'll share any response from the district as we hear back. If you have questions or thoughts, please bring them to the meeting on the 14th or reply to this email.
