Sun, Oct 5 4:32pm
Hello all!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Meghan Butler and I'm excited to be the newest PTA president. My children, Bridget + Martin Spillane are in 1st and 3rd grade. In the past I've chaired the Book Fair + Spirit Wear Committees and have co-chaired the Gala Committee for the last two years. I am excited to work with all of you to build community for our children. Please come say hi in the yard!

We have our second PTA meeting on Wednesday, October 8th @ 6pm. Childcare is available as well as translation services so I do hope you'll join us! There is also a dial-in for those who are not able to attend in-person.  We also head to Rampant Wine Bar afterwards at 7:30pm for cocktails or mocktails. Feel free to join either or both!

The school year is off to an eventful start and we're looking forward to sharing lots of updates on Wednesday. In the meantime, I wanted to share a brief update on the STEAM program. We'll discuss during the meeting.

🧬 🧪 STEAM Update 🧪 🧬

Our beloved former STEAM teacher, Ms. Tong, left some very large shoes to fill. To ensure that we are spending everyone's generously donated funds wisely, the executive board decided that the best option was to participate in a 10-week pilot program with a new STEAM vendor. We believe that this path forward allows us to test out a vendor and ensure their curriculum and instructors are the right caliber for our community before writing a very large check.

Beginning this week, the 4th and 5th graders will participate in a 10-week pilot where they will explore engineering, physics and life science challenges with a "Mars Rover" theme.

After this pilot is complete, provided the feedback is positive, we will have a full rollout of 18 weeks of STEAM for K-5 as well as an additional 10-week special for the K-3 grades in the Spring. This will allow for all students to receive an equitable amount of programming over the course of the year. We are working closely with the teachers in K-3 to determine what the 10-week special will be to ensure it aligns with their curriculum.

We appreciate everyone's support and patience while we navigate SFUSD's labyrinthian rules for bringing in new vendors and teachers. We are hopeful that the pilot will be a smashing success! I look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday!

best,
Meghan
