Important Please Read: Proposed SFUSD Cut to School Social Workers
Mon, Dec 15 2:08pm

Dear Lafayette Families,

We are writing today to share important information about a proposed district staffing change that would directly impact Lafayette and its students.

Last week, SFUSD released a draft of the 2026–27 School Staffing Model, which includes a significant reduction to School Social Worker (SSW) positions across the district. You can view the draft here.

Proposed Cut to School Social Workers

Under the new model, only Title I schools would receive a full-time School Social Worker. All other schools — including Lafayette — would lose their social worker allocation entirely. This change would eliminate 45 social worker positions districtwide.

For Lafayette, this would mean no district-funded social worker on campus, removing critical support for student well-being, conflict resolution, crisis response, restorative practices, and family assistance. As many of you know, this role is essential to creating a safe, caring, and emotionally supportive school environment.

How We’re Responding as a Community

We are asking families to help advocate for the preservation of school social workers by sending emails to the Superintendent and the Board of Education. Letters submitted by Tuesday, December 16 before 5pm will be included in the public record for the next Board of Education meeting.

To make this easy, we have created copy/paste templates you can copy and paste — including:

  1. a general version

  2. a Lafayette–specific version

  3. a student version

👉 Letter Templates can be found at this link

Even if you simply copy/paste a template, adding your name and sending it will make a meaningful difference. Our collective voice matters.

We will continue to keep families informed as SFUSD moves through its budgeting process in January. Thank you for staying engaged and for advocating for the well-being of all Lafayette students.

Warmly,

Your PTA Board
