Dear Lafayette Community,
On Friday, you received updates regarding the collective bargaining negotiations between SFUSD and the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF). We wanted to share some additional information so you are informed about the current status, the possibility of a teachers strike, and what it could mean for Lafayette Elementary.
SFUSD and UESF follows a multi-step collective bargaining process shown below:

Friday ended at step 13 with no resolution, and the Fact Finding Report (Step 14) should be expected soon. The report provides a non-binding independent recommendation that does not have to be accepted by either party. There is still an opportunity for SFUSD to provide another offer. Should an impasse be reached, UESF will most likely proceed with a strike.
The vote for authorizing a strike is a two step process where the first vote already passed with 99% approval. The second vote is currently in progress, and the results are expected by mid-week. Further information from UESF with updates can be found here.
Should a strike happen, there is the potential for schools to be closed. As the likelihood becomes clearer, SFUSD will share more information, so families can make necessary arrangements. There is also a local effort to create resources for families who may need childcare in the event the schools do close. As soon as I hear more, I will share.
We recognize that this uncertainty is stressful for families, particularly those who may face childcare or work-related challenges if schools close. We will continue to communicate clearly and promptly as more information becomes available, and we encourage families to pay attention to official SFUSD, UESF, and school communications for updates. While the negotiations continue this week, there will be relevant public comment and discussion at the Tuesday, 1/27 Board of Education meeting and Wednesday, 1/28 UESF Town Hall, both of which are open to the public.
We believe strongly in a public education system that attracts and retains great educators. We are fortunate to have some of the best teachers at Lafayette. At the same time, we can’t ignore the district’s budget constraints. We remain hopeful that SFUSD and UESF leadership reach a resolution soon, which will be in the best interest of our students.
Sincerely,
Meghan Butler
