On Friday, your PTA Board met with board members from Sellwood Middle School, our neighboring elementary school PTAs, and community members to discuss how we can work together to advocate for our schools.
We believe we are stronger together! We’re joining forces to raise our voices, take action, and fight to keep our Portland public schools open.
Here is how you can help:
PPS is proposing to close up to 14 schools as part of its ‘rightsizing’ plan, including Sellwood Middle School.
This is NOT a done deal. We can protect Sellwood and our neighborhood schools, but the district decision timeline is short (the board votes in December). We need a massive showing of community support right now.
4 Ways You Can Take Action Today:
- Fill Out the Survey: Let PPS know how you feel about the proposed scenarios in their survey here.
- Email the Decision-Makers: Write to the PPS Board, local legislators, and news media. See below for links to email template and directory.
- Attend Upcoming Action Events (full list in links): Wear your school gear, bring your kids, and show up!
- Oct 13 @ 6:30 PM: Sellwood Community House Brainstorm Meeting
- Oct 15 @ 7:00 PM: Sellwood Middle School PTA Meeting (PPS Board member invited, SMS T-shirts available to purchase!)
- Oct 19 @ 3:00–6:00 PM: Letter-Writing & Sign-Making Party at SMILE Station
- Oct 20 @ 5:00 PM: PPS Rally & Board Meeting (Rally at 5:00 PM, Meeting at 6:00 PM)
- Oct 23 @ 8:00 AM: Constituent Coffee with Mark Gamba and Mitch Green @ Duniway Elementary
- Testify at the Oct 20 Board Meeting: Speak directly to the board in person or via Zoom. Deadline to sign up: October 19 at 12:00 PM (Noon). Sign up for public testimony here.
