Good afternoon, friends.

Ms. Metcalf sent this out to her second grade class today, and with her permission, I’m including it here, because it was exactly what I needed to hear this weekend:

Friday's Closure/Consolidation announcement from AISD was not was any of us was hoping for. It feels as if an earthquake has struck at the heart of our community. This has been a weekend of deep sadness, anger, confusion, worry, and disillusionment. Our hearts are breaking for a school community that we love so dearly, and one that is so central to who we are and what we do.

BUT in spite of my breaking heart--or maybe because of it--I am determined to stick with hope, as long as hope for our district is possible. Not a hope that the decision will change or be reversed, but hope that we can lift ourselves from this moment that feels like such disaster, and work with a spirit of openness, humility, and optimism to build a new community school together with our neighbors.

Everything changes. Change can be awfully hard. But we are a community that can do hard things together. The fact that Maplewood's boundaries are remaining intact is hugely important. We will not be dispersed. Together, with empathy and open hearts, we can choose to embrace the Campbell community and commit to working arm in arm to build something new that is more diverse and inclusive than our current reality. This is an opportunity to truly live out the values we claim to have.

...But all that lies ahead. On this weekend, we cry. We hug one another, and we hug our children. We reassure them that it's going to be okay, that the grown-ups are going to work together to problem-solve and continue building a bright future for them. And then, even as we're still wiping our tears, we get to work as the Peacemakers we're called to be.

 

❓ What happens next with the school consolidation proposal?

  • The advocacy team is pushing for a delay to the proposed changes. Here’s how to get involved.
  • PTA leadership is building relationships with Campbell’s PTA leadership and our shared AISD trustee so that we can begin integrating our communities and schools.

 

✅ To do list

  • Give the teachers and staff SPACE to process.
  • Give everyone GRACE as we collectively bumble through newfound anxieties and imaginaries.
  • The future may be uncertain, but there's no doubt that we need money for programs this year. Donate if you're able, please.
  • Sign your kids up for Parents’ Night Out on October 17, hosted by 4th grade. If you get a “session expired” message, just click “start again” .

 

📆 Save the date

  • TODAY is Ms. Kirk’s birthday! Let’s celebrate her all week.
  • Wednesday, 7:15am: meet at Patterson Park for Walk & Roll to school.
  • Thursday:
  • Friday: no school, and Ms. Garcia’s birthday. Celebrate her with gifts this week and next.
  • This whole week is Principal Appreciation week. We can’t even imagine the kind of stress Ms. Noe is under; let’s shower her with grace, space, appreciation, Dr. Pepper, Peanut M&Ms, and love.

 

🤗 Look what we did!

We raised over $1,700 in just a few hours to fund happy hour for teachers and staff on Friday. Big thanks to Adell Grim for organizing and to everyone who pitched in.*

Buenas tardes, amigos.

La Sra. Metcalf envió esto a su clase de segundo grado hoy, y con su permiso, lo incluyo aquí, porque era exactamente lo que necesitaba escuchar este fin de semana:

El anuncio del cierre/consolidación del distrito escolar de AISD del viernes no fue lo que ninguno de nosotros esperaba. Se siente como si un terremoto hubiera golpeado el corazón de nuestra comunidad. Este fin de semana ha estado lleno de profunda tristeza, ira, confusión, preocupación y desilusión. Nos duele el corazón por una comunidad escolar que tanto amamos y que es fundamental para quienes somos y lo que hacemos.

Pero a pesar de mi dolor, o quizás debido a él, estoy decidido a mantener la esperanza, mientras haya esperanza para nuestro distrito. No es una esperanza de que la decisión cambie o se revierta, sino de que podamos superar este momento desastroso y trabajar con un espíritu de apertura, humildad y optimismo para construir una nueva escuela comunitaria junto con nuestros vecinos.

Todo cambia. El cambio puede ser terriblemente difícil. Pero somos una comunidad que puede superar las dificultades juntos. El hecho de que los límites de Maplewood se mantengan intactos es fundamental. No nos dispersaremos. Juntos, con empatía y un corazón abierto, podemos elegir acoger a la comunidad de Campbell y comprometernos a trabajar codo con codo para construir algo nuevo, más diverso e inclusivo que nuestra realidad actual. Esta es una oportunidad para vivir verdaderamente los valores que decimos tener.

...Pero todo eso nos espera. Este fin de semana, lloramos. Nos abrazamos y abrazamos a nuestros hijos. Les aseguramos que todo estará bien, que los adultos trabajarán juntos para resolver los problemas y seguir construyendo un futuro brillante para ellos. Y luego, incluso mientras nos secamos las lágrimas, nos ponemos a trabajar como los pacificadores que estamos llamados a ser.

 

❓ ¿Qué sucede ahora con la propuesta de consolidación escolar?

  • El equipo de defensa está presionando por un retraso a los cambios propuestos. Aquí está cómo involucrarse.
  • El liderazgo de la PTA está construyendo relaciones con el liderazgo de la PTA de Campbell y nuestro fideicomisario compartido de AISD.

 

✅ Por hacer

  • Darles a los maestros y al personal ESPACIO para procesar.
  • Darle a todos GRACIA mientras colectivamente tropezamos con nuevas ansiedades e imaginarios.
  • El futuro puede ser incierto, pero no hay duda de que necesitamos dinero para programas este año. Done aquí.
  • Inscriba a sus hijos para la Noche de Padres el 17 de octubre, organizada por el 4to grado. Si recibe un mensaje de "sesión expirada", simplemente haga clic en "empezar de nuevo".

 

📆 Guarde la fecha

  • ¡HOY es el cumpleaños de la Sra. Kirk! Celebrémosla toda la semana.
  • Miércoles, 7:15am: encuentro en Patterson Park para Caminar y Rodar a la escuela.
  • Jueves:
  • Viernes: no hay clases, y es el cumpleaños de la Sra. García. Celébrela con regalos esta semana y la próxima.
  • Toda esta semana es la Semana de Apreciación de la Directora. Ni siquiera podemos imaginar el tipo de estrés bajo el que está la Sra. Noe; colmémosla de gracia, espacio, aprecio, Dr. Pepper, M&Ms de maní, y amor.
