MDE Odyssey of the Mind program 2020/21
MDE is lucky to participate in Odyssey of the Mind, a program which teaches students creative problem-solving methods while having fun in the process. For almost 40 years, this outstanding program has helped students unleash their creativity, by encouraging them to take imaginative paths to problem solving. Odyssey of the Mind teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges and to think “outside of the box” to solve them. They are free to express their ideas and suggestions without fear of criticism. Student’s hard work culminates in an 8 minute performance of their problem “answer” at a Regional Tournament in early March 2021.
While our Odyssey program is open to all students grades 2-5, this is a unique year. Teams meet in the home of their coaches once a week to practice and each team of 7 students requires at least one volunteer parent coach. This is a rewarding, but very involved, volunteer role and will require rigorous safety precautions this season.
***In order to assess how widely we can open up the program, we first need to assess how many parents are willing to volunteer to coach this season. If you are interested or want more information about coaching an Odyssey team, please read the attached flyer and contact Laney Cline King at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than Monday, September 28.
