Let's talk about Lice, Seals!

My whole family has had lice twice in the month of February. I personally know of over 20 families at our school that have told me their kids (and parents) have had lice this month. It is currently raging through our community here at North Beach. It’s harder to see and harder to get rid of than people think.

  1. Please check your kids often. Here’s a great video on how to do a lice check correctly. I’ve also attached a step by step guide below.  You cannot just part the hair and casually look for bugs. We tried this with our kids and thought they were fine… they were not!

  2. If you’re unsure of your ability to check on your own, there is a great clinic just up on Greenwood that specializes in nothing but Lice called The Lice Clinic. They offer checks and do full removal treatments that come with a 5 week follow up period of multiple checks and treatments until the lice is gone.

  3. If your child does have lice the only way to get rid of it is to fully remove every single bug and egg from the head with a lice comb. The chemical treatments of our youth no longer work on 80% of lice. It is a time consuming process that requires patience (or a professional from The Lice Clinic).

  4. Attached to this message is a step by step guide of everything you need to do in your home to get rid of lice.

  5. There’s a lot of myths and misinformation about lice out there… check out this EPA website with the facts!

  6. Once you are confident your kid is lice free, experts recommend wearing longer hair up, braids, buns, ponytails while interacting with other children. This can significantly reduce their chances of getting lice!

  7. Unlike the flu or a cold there is no immunity to lice. Your kid can get it over and over and over again while it is circulating in the school. SPS’s policy is that kids do not have to go home or miss school for lice. So, we need to all work together to end the outbreak!

If you see me around, feel free to ask me any lice related questions… I’ve unfortunately become more of an expert this month and am happy to share my hard earned knowledge!

Sincerely,

Jennifer
