Dear North Beach Community,
Today we received the difficult news that North Beach Elementary is one of many Seattle schools on the list for potential closures and consolidations in the 25-26 school year. North Beach is such a special community, a place where our children are growing up, and where many in our community grew up themselves.
In the face of this sad news, we need to take time to connect, grieve, and discuss what’s next. Therefore, the school is postponing Curriculum Night and the North Beach Elementary PTA will be hosting an emergency PTA Meeting on Tuesday, September 17th at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. Our community needs to come together and be ready for action.
The PTA will be providing child care for this event. Children will spend time in the gym during the meeting. We will also have a zoom option for people to join (see very bottom of this message for the zoom link and password)
Principal McLane will be reaching out to the community in the next few weeks with any additional information she has available. At this time, she has not been provided any communications besides what was sent out by SPS and posted on the district’s “Well Resourced Schools” website.
Let’s also remember those most impacted by North Beach’s closure, our students. Please center your children when you discuss closures and consolidations. This is a very big and scary issue for many of our learners. Read Ms Reid’s, North Beach Counselor’s, advice on the North Beach PTA website.
What We are Doing to Fight for the North Beach Community:
As we unanimously voted in our June PTA meeting, the North Beach Elementary PTA’s efforts will not be solely to advocate for our school site, but it will be a fight for all students in Seattle. SPS’s plan for school closures and consolidations lacks community insight, will not solve the over a hundred million dollars deficit, and is disastrous to communities around the city.
The North Beach PTA launched the Fund SPS Advocacy group and website that is focusing on increasing advocacy around the entire city. The goal is to demand better educational outcomes from our State Legislators and School Board.
The PTA will send out more information for the legally mandated community meetings, public comment, and SPS School Board voting timelines. We’ll also be sharing more ways you can work to help save the North Beach community and numerous others across the district.
We urge you to join us in this difficult fight to save our schools and public education. Join us on Tuesday, September 17th at 6:30pm. Let’s take action, get loud, and fight for our children’s education and the future of education in our city.
In solidarity,
The North Beach Elementary PTA
