Announcements from Mr. Chung

Dear PS20 Families,

Welcome, and welcome back to a new year of learning, sharing, connecting, and dancing! I hope you all enjoyed your summer and I look forward to catching up with every one of you. I was blessed this summer to spend time with my family in Korea, and also to receive my second award from National Endowment for the Arts to study at Dancewave’s newly opened flagship location near Barclays Center. Well, here we are - back to school, and I am super excited to get in to it with you all!

DANCE ATTIRE: Appropriate dress for dance is bare feet. Dancers will practice and be graded on removing and putting on shoes and socks properly! With parent reinforcement, we can expect not to see inside-out, peeled-off socks at home by November :) “No banana peel socks! Mr. Chung likes popsicle wrapper socks!”

BACK TO SCHOOL TIP: Shop for shoes kids can put on without help. For younger students, shoes without laces allow them to be independent. Allow extra time in the morning routine to practice the shoe routine, especially when parents are ready to teach and children are ready to learn to tie shoelaces. Shoelace tying is typically taught by parents around grades K-2. If you have any questions about footwear, feel free to see me or contact me on Konstella.

KONSTELLA: The school and I use Konstella to communicate. If you haven’t yet, you’re missing out on lots of important announcements, pictures, events, signup sheets, and community chat. Please sign up on

PARENT VOLUNTEERS: I am happy to accept volunteers to help with decorating, administrative tasks, and assisting classes – please contact me by email or on Konstella.

HALLOWEEN DANCE PARTY: I am again planning to bring dancers to a festival at Myrtle Ave. Plaza, hosted by Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership. Details TBA.

DANCE CLUB: Through December, Dance Club will work specifically on “tricking” – tumbling skills such as back walkovers, back handsprings, and back tucks. We’ll meet Mondays and Tuesdays after school, 2:40-3:45pm. Free! Please email me if you’re interested. Space is limited.

DANCE PARTY THIS SATURDAY! September 14, 7:30-midnight, Please join me as I DJ and MC a specially child-friendly edition of the Barefoot Boogie, NYC’s longest-running ecstatic dance party. I’ve been involved with the Boogie for ten years, and it’s a great community of dancers who like to get loose without the alcohol, drugs, and attitude around the club scene. This event is not affiliated with PS20.  $0-20. At Insight Meditation Center, 28 W.27th St., Manhattan.

See you on the dance floor!

                                                                                                                                As Family,

                                                                                                                                David Chung
