Do you have a child born in 2018? If so, you will apply to kindergarten this winter!

Dear families,

Do you have a child born in 2018? If so, you will apply to kindergarten this winter! The kindergarten application will open next week.

You also have the option to apply to Gifted & Talented programs on the same application.

Here’s what you can do now to prepare:

  • Find out what your child’s zoned kindergarten program is by entering your home address at schoolsearch.schools.nyc.  Districts 1, 7, and 23 do not have zoned schools, and children living in these districts have priority to all schools in their district.
  • Explore elementary schools in our searchable MySchools directory.  Watch the kindergarten video playlist on our website, featuring several MySchools tutorials, including how to create an account.
  • Learn how to navigate the directory. You can search program options near you by entering your address and filter based on your needs. For example, you can filter for programs that offer late pickup.
  • Attend school open houses! Visiting schools online or in person is a great way to imagine what it’s like to go there. Each school’s website is listed on its MySchools page, or contact them directly to learn if they will be hosting any virtual or in-person events. You can also view and save events to your calendar using our new MySchools Events Calendar.

All New York City families with children born in 2018 are encouraged to apply. Even if your child is currently attending a pre-K program, you still have to apply to kindergarten.

If you list G&T programs on your application, eligibility will be determined after the application closes. Current pre-K students at DOE/district schools, Pre-K Centers, NYC Early Education Centers (NYCEECs), or charter school are evaluated by their current pre-K teachers. Current pre-K students at private or parochial school programs, or for children who are not yet in school will be contacted by the Division of Early Childhood Education to set up interviews that will determine eligibility.
