Dear PS 20 Families,

On Thursday, June 1, 2023 we will be hosting our third annual $10K for PS20 Social Justice Run, a benefit run at Fort Greene Park to raise $10,000 for the school PTA’s Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) Fund - donation form is attached. This year, we are excited to invite students and families to enjoy the rest of the day with a Family Picnic in the park. We encourage all who are able to please join us to cheer on our students and enjoy the picnic with activities afterwards.

HOW IT WORKS

Leading up to June 1, students will be working together with their teachers to focus on a social cause under the umbrella of JEDI: issues like LGBTQ+ rights, racial and gender equality, religious freedom, immigrant rights, climate change, fighting hunger and homelessness, etc. What is important to the class? What does the class stand for? On the morning of June 1, the mini-relay will be led by activist, runner and PS20 parent Kelvin Coffey (founder of Define New York Run Club and co-founder of Running to Protest) along with other community leaders.

    • STUDENTS: Each class will focus on a cause, research the topic and make signs in school.
      • Students start a sponsorship form to fundraise → See attached sponsorship form
      • On June 1, each class will do a short run around the inner loop of the park together.
    • FAMILIES: Support your class with donations, signs and encouragement!

  • Donate by texting “PS20JEDI" to 44-321
  • On June 1, volunteers are needed to help escort classes to & from Fort Greene Park.

We all know that the many injustices in society are far too embedded and deep to tackle all at once – but just like running, it’s about the individual and taking one stride at a time. With this day of action, we hope to bring more awareness to a variety of issues and engage our corner of Brooklyn, taking meaningful steps each day towards a more Just, Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive world.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me, your teacher or David Pristin, President of the PS20 PTA (david.pristin@ps20.org).

Sincerely,

Principal Barbera

HISTORY: The PTA launched this event in 2021, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, and is a cornerstone of our school’s commitment to addressing social injustices. All proceeds from the race will go to the PTA’s JEDI Fund a valuable resource that allows us to do everything from conducting workshops to ensuring all students can participate in school activities like book fairs and field trips.
