Good Day  PS 20 Families:

It took approximately four weeks for me to feel stronger, in order to engage in my work related responsibilities, including  composing this note. My husband and I were both caring for one another in isolation. Thankfully, neither one of us needed to be hospitalized.  The experience was frightening to say the least,  but very grateful that we have since recovered, and feeling better everyday.  Sadly however, this is not the same situation for others who have contracted COVID-19.

There are members of our PS 20 Community that are currently dealing with COVID -19.  Many of us know someone, or have someone close to us that is ill. Some of our students have lost loved ones, some of our staff members have lost loved ones as well.  My heart and prayers go out to all families coping with this terrible reality.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your kind words and prayers.  I also want to thank the PS 20 Staff, under the leadership of our Assistant Principal Nicole Blyden. Together they stayed on course and transitioned to remote learning. I am so impressed with their professionalism and resolve throughout this process. I am equally impressed with how patient and supportive our parents have been as we continue to learn while doing.

As our teachers continue to explore new ways to keep students engaged in learning experiences in this remote environment, I assure you that we will remain flexible and sensitive to the unique conditions that you may have.  I encourage you all to stay the course.  Let the classroom teacher know what the barriers are, or any concerns that you may have. They will do their best to support you.

Ms. DeShong and Ms. Colon have focused on ensuring that all of our students have access to the appropriate technology needed to engage in distant learning. They have made strides, but there is still plenty of work to be done.  Please reach out to either of them if you need support in this area.

The PS20 Staff will forge ahead together with the upmost care and concern for all.  There is nothing more important to me than our emotional well being during these challenging times.

Be well, stay safe, take care of each other. It’s good to be back.

Best,

Lena Johnson-Barbera
