A message from the International and Multicultural Families Committee:

Dear PS20 Community,

As you may know, the holy month of Ramadan is fast approaching.  It is a month when Muslims worldwide focus on fasting, prayer, self-reflection, charity, and community. Below are some quick facts that were shared by the PS20 School Administration with teachers, which we thought would be helpful to share with the broader community so we can serve as allies to those in the PS20 community who are observing.

  • Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting.  Practicing Muslim students may be fasting from dawn until dusk ( you may see this more in the upper grades). Fasting = NO FOOD & NO WATER

  • The month of Ramadan 2025 is February 28 - March 29 ** The first day of fasting is determined by the actual sighting of the moon and may begin Feb 28 or March 1. During Ramadan, some Muslims will often pray late into the night and then get up around 4am to eat & pray before dawn.

  • Fasting students may be tired, hungry and dehydrated.  Many may be new to fasting and their bodies are still adjusting.
  • It's okay to eat in front of those who are fasting without feeling the need to apologize. Most individuals who fast are accustomed to being around others who are not. However, be ready to adapt if someone expresses discomfort. Simply be supportive and accommodating.

  • How to Offer Support: Wish your Muslim friends “Ramadan Mubarak” (Happy Ramadan) or “Ramadan Kareem” (may Ramadan be generous to you). You can also simply say “Happy Ramadan” in English. This doesn’t imply that you share or endorse Islamic beliefs; it is simply a way to show kindness and respect for your Muslim friends and acquaintances
To all of those observing, Ramadan Mubarak.
